Barcelona’s preseason has taken an unexpected twist with news that star goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen could miss a large chunk of the 2025–26 campaign. The German international is battling a recurring back issue that may require surgery—casting serious doubt over both his playing availability and his future at the club.

Ter Stegen’s Absence Sparks Concern and Speculation

When Ter Stegen was noticeably absent from the early preseason training sessions, speculation spread rapidly. Fans and media alike theorized that the goalkeeper might be protesting or pushing for a transfer away from Camp Nou. Meanwhile, young Joan García stepped up in training, quickly becoming a contender to start under new manager Hansi Flick.

However, reports have now confirmed that Ter Stegen is nursing a back injury that may require surgical intervention. If he opts for the operation, his recovery could take anywhere from four to six months—ruling him out for the entire first half of the season.

Surgery Could Derail Summer Exit Plans

Barcelona had been actively exploring the possibility of offloading Ter Stegen this summer in an effort to free up salary space and revamp the squad. But a lengthy recovery period would almost certainly halt any immediate transfer opportunities.

The German international earns an estimated €16 million ($18.5 million) annually—making him one of the club’s top earners. A sale would have significantly relieved financial pressure. Now, that strategy is on hold, complicating the club’s broader summer restructuring plans.

Barcelona May Turn to La Liga Injury Clause

Despite the setback, Barcelona may still find a silver lining by utilizing La Liga’s injury replacement clause. The rule allows clubs to temporarily reallocate up to 80% of an injured player’s salary toward signing a replacement.

This same clause enabled Barça to register Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor during Andreas Christensen’s injury last season. With Ter Stegen’s high wages temporarily off the books, the Catalan club could potentially register García and even make an additional signing under La Liga’s strict 1:1 financial rule.

Options in Goal: García and Szczęsny Poised to Step In

With Ter Stegen potentially out until early 2026, Barcelona will likely rely on Joan García and newly signed veteran Wojciech Szczęsny to hold down the fort in goal. Both are capable options, and Flick may see this as a chance to shape a new defensive identity heading into the season.

Meanwhile, if Ter Stegen successfully recovers and regains form, a January 2026 transfer could be back on the table—just in time for him to prepare for the FIFA World Cup later that year.

A Recurring Problem with Long-Term Implications

This isn’t Ter Stegen’s first run-in with back issues. He previously underwent surgery in November 2023, which sidelined him for two months. Unfortunately, the problem appears to have resurfaced, and this latest development could have long-term implications for both player and club.

Barcelona must now navigate the start of the new season without their captain and primary shot-stopper—while also figuring out how to optimize their squad and wage structure in his absence.
