As Arsenal prepare for one of their toughest European tests yet this season, manager Mikel Arteta has stressed the importance of staying grounded and focused. Despite the Gunners’ red-hot form across all competitions, the Spaniard has warned his squad not to get ahead of themselves as they gear up to host Diego Simeone’s battle-hardened Atletico Madrid in a high-stakes Champions League clash.
Gunners Flying High but Keeping Their Feet on the Ground
Arsenal are currently unbeaten since August and sit three points clear at the top of the Premier League. They’ve also secured back-to-back wins in their Champions League group stage, but Arteta remains cautious when asked whether his side are now considered favourites both domestically and in Europe.
“I don’t buy into those labels,” Arteta told reporters on Monday. “What I do believe in is the energy and determination this team shows every day. That belief makes me think we can go all the way—but feelings aren’t enough. Every match is a new test, and we must keep proving ourselves.”
Arteta emphasized the intensity of every Premier League fixture and the importance of not getting carried away with outside talk. “In this league, every game is a must-win. That’s the mindset we need to keep,” he added.
Saliba’s Dedication Earns Praise
Following Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 win over Fulham on Saturday, a video circulated on social media showing William Saliba watching Atletico footage on the team bus. Arteta was quick to commend the French defender’s initiative and preparation.
“I love that kind of mindset,” Arteta said. “It wasn’t something I told him to do. That kind of self-driven preparation speaks volumes. When players take that responsibility themselves, it tells me they understand the level of the challenge ahead.”
Admiration for Simeone’s Legacy at Atletico
Looking ahead to the clash, Arteta shared his admiration for Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone, hailing his longevity and the strong identity he has built at the Spanish club since taking over in 2011.
“What he’s done is phenomenal—not just the trophies, but the culture he’s embedded in the team,” Arteta said. “You know what an Atletico side looks like. That clarity and consistency are incredibly hard to achieve.”
Simeone’s silverware cabinet includes two LaLiga titles and two Europa League triumphs, and Arteta admitted the Argentine manager is someone he looks up to.
“His passion, his ability to continually motivate players for over a decade in such a demanding environment—that’s something I truly respect,” he added.
Team News: Hincapie Set to Return
Arsenal received a boost ahead of Tuesday night’s showdown, with defender Piero Hincapie declared fit after recovering from a groin injury. The Ecuadorian’s availability will give Arteta more defensive options against an Atletico side known for their physicality and tactical discipline.
