With Matheus Cunha already secured from Wolves in a £62.5 million deal, United are prioritizing attacking reinforcements after a goal-shy 2024/25 season. Yet despite early efforts, their top striker target Liam Delap opted to join Chelsea instead, forcing United to explore alternative options.

Names like Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyökeres, and Hugo Ekitike have surfaced, but Watkins has now emerged as a strong contender. The 28-year-old enjoyed a standout campaign with 31 goal contributions in 54 matches last season, further elevating his profile as one of the Premier League’s most consistent forwards.

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Manchester United are seriously considering a move for Watkins, describing him as a forward who “ticks a lot of boxes” in terms of style, experience, and versatility.

However, the potential transfer is not straightforward. With UEFA Financial Fair Play (FFP) and Premier League Profit & Sustainability Rules (PSR) looming large, United may need to offload players before making another marquee signing. That’s where Hojlund’s situation becomes pivotal.

“A lot will depend on what happens with Hojlund,” O’Rourke explained. “United probably can’t afford to bring in Watkins alongside Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo unless they move players out first.”

Hojlund, once viewed as a long-term solution, has struggled for form over the past year and is reportedly attracting interest from Serie A clubs. There’s also speculation around Joshua Zirkzee, another forward who could be sold to create financial flexibility.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa may be open to selling Watkins to stay compliant with PSR regulations, potentially opening the door for United to strike a deal—if the dominoes fall into place.
