Tottenham Hotspur’s summer overhaul under new manager Thomas Frank could hit a significant roadblock, with Real Madrid now eyeing a move for Cristian Romero. The Argentine centre-back, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most uncompromising defenders, has emerged as a top target for Los Blancos following their humbling Club World Cup exit at the hands of PSG.

After a disappointing 17th-place finish in the Premier League—a season plagued by injuries and inconsistency—Spurs’ Europa League triumph over Manchester United offered a rare high point. The victory not only secured Champions League qualification but also boosted the club’s summer transfer budget. However, the momentum has been tempered by fresh concerns over Romero’s future.

Despite fitness concerns throughout 2024/25, Romero remains a cornerstone of Tottenham’s defensive setup. His tenacity, timing, and leadership in the backline have made him a sought-after asset. Atlético Madrid had been leading the chase for the 26-year-old, with negotiations reportedly progressing well. Yet, their plans have been complicated by an unexpected rival: Real Madrid.

Sources in Spain, including Fichajes, claim that Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has placed Romero high on his shortlist after identifying a need for greater steel and discipline at the back. The report suggests the Spanish giants are willing to go as high as €80 million (£69 million) to bring the World Cup winner to the Bernabéu.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is believed to be reluctant to sanction Romero’s departure unless a transformative offer lands on his desk. Given Romero’s contract situation and importance to the squad, Spurs are under no immediate pressure to sell. But with Madrid’s growing interest and Atlético still lurking, the situation is evolving quickly.

While Real Madrid have alternative options on the table, Romero is understood to be a favorite among the club’s senior decision-makers. Their willingness to meet Tottenham’s valuation could test the north London club’s resolve, particularly if Romero expresses a desire to move.

For Thomas Frank, who is just settling into his role after replacing Ange Postecoglou, losing such a pivotal figure before the new campaign kicks off would be a major blow. Spurs have already committed around £65 million in signings this summer, but the potential departure of their defensive leader could force a re-evaluation of their transfer priorities.

As it stands, no formal bid has been submitted. But with both Spanish powerhouses circling, Spurs will need to brace themselves for a tense few weeks ahead in the transfer market.
