Newcastle’s Pursuit of Wissa Threatens Manchester United’s Mbeumo Transfer Plans

Man United Transfer Target Bryan Mbeumo
Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has been linked with a move to Man Utd.

Manchester United’s summer transfer momentum could be at risk as Newcastle United intensify their interest in Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. With the Red Devils actively chasing Bryan Mbeumo, a potential Wissa exit could complicate their hopes of landing the Cameroonian international—adding further pressure to a transfer window already facing internal challenges.

Mbeumo Deal Under Threat Amid Newcastle Move for Wissa

Manchester United have already bolstered their squad with two early signings this summer—Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Paraguayan youngster Diego Leon from Cerro Porteño. But the club’s next major target, Bryan Mbeumo, may be slipping through their fingers.

According to reports from The Athletic, United have tabled a third improved offer for Mbeumo. The 24-year-old, known for his pace and goal contributions at Brentford, is seen as a key piece in Erik ten Hag’s attacking rebuild. However, developments elsewhere in the Premier League could throw a wrench into the works.

Newcastle’s Striker Hunt Causes Ripple Effects

Newcastle United had set their sights on Hugo Ekitike, but with the Eintracht Frankfurt forward seemingly bound for Liverpool, the Magpies have turned their attention to Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. As reported by Sky Sports, Wissa’s potential departure would significantly affect Brentford’s willingness to sell Mbeumo in the same window.

Brentford, already dealing with the exits of head coach Thomas Frank and captain Christian Nørgaard, are reluctant to lose two key forwards. Selling both Wissa and Mbeumo in the same window would represent a major blow to their attacking depth—a situation the club reportedly wants to avoid at all costs.

Sheringham: United Must Clear Out to Move Forward

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham weighed in on the club’s sluggish progress in the market, pointing fingers at the stalled player exits. Speaking to Sky Bet, Sheringham said the initial buzz around United’s early signings has fizzled due to the club’s failure to offload surplus talent.

“United started the window brightly with Cunha and the talk around Mbeumo, but things have slowed,” he said. “A lot of that comes down to moving players out who are on big wages and don’t want to leave.”

Sheringham also suggested that United’s public desire to offload up to five players has weakened their negotiating stance, allowing rival clubs to make undervalued offers. “The longer it goes, the less leverage United have. They might have to settle for a fraction of what they originally hoped to get,” he added.

Conclusion: Urgency Mounts for United in Delicate Transfer Puzzle

Manchester United now face a delicate balancing act. With Newcastle pushing for Wissa, time is running out to secure Mbeumo before Brentford shut the door on further departures. Compounded by the need to trim the wage bill and move out unwanted players, United’s transfer strategy hangs in the balance.
