Barcelona’s No. 1 and German international Marc-André ter Stegen is set for another spell on the sidelines after undergoing back surgery. The veteran goalkeeper confirmed in a personal statement that he’ll be out of action for approximately three months as he embarks on his road to recovery.

Ter Stegen Confirms Extended Absence After Surgery

The 33-year-old goalkeeper took to Instagram to share the news, revealing that medical professionals have recommended a three-month recovery period to ensure he avoids further complications. The operation, aimed at addressing lingering back issues, marks another chapter in Ter Stegen’s recent battle with injuries.

“This time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks,” Ter Stegen wrote. He added, “Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear.”

Ongoing Injury Concerns for Barça’s Star Keeper

This latest setback comes just a year after Ter Stegen missed seven months due to a serious knee injury that required surgery. He only returned to the pitch in May 2024, making this new injury especially frustrating for both player and club.

Ter Stegen also had back surgery in 2023, which kept him out for over two months. Now, Barcelona must again adapt without their captain and key shot-stopper during a crucial stretch of the season.

Impact on Club and Country

Since joining Barcelona in 2014, Ter Stegen has become a central figure at the Camp Nou, winning six LaLiga titles and the Champions League. His absence will be deeply felt as Barcelona navigate domestic and European campaigns.

From an international standpoint, the timing is also concerning for Germany. With important fixtures on the horizon, including Euro qualifiers and potential tournament preparations, Ter Stegen’s fitness will be closely monitored by national team staff.

Road to Recovery and Future Outlook

Despite the disappointment, the veteran goalkeeper remains optimistic. His message highlighted that while the recovery process is demanding, it’s clear and well-structured—providing hope for a full return before the season ends.

Barcelona are expected to rely on backup options in the meantime, with increased responsibility falling on younger keepers and the club’s defensive unit.
