Why Monaco Plan to Delay Paul Pogba's Debut for Three Months

Monaco will delay Paul Pogba’s debut until October, focusing on his long-term fitness. The former Manchester United midfielder has not played since 2023 and is working through a three-month rehab process.

Monaco Delays Pogba’s Return to Action Until October

Paul Pogba’s long-awaited return to competitive football will be delayed by three months after Monaco decided to take a cautious approach with the French midfielder. The 32-year-old, who joined the Ligue 1 club on a free transfer earlier this summer, has not played a professional match since September 2023 due to a doping suspension and subsequent recovery process.

The French World Cup winner signed a two-year contract with Monaco, who have been clear about their plans for him. Despite showing signs of improvement in Monaco’s pre-season camp in England, the club has opted to follow a structured rehabilitation program to ensure that Pogba returns to full fitness before making his debut.

Monaco’s Cautious Approach to Pogba’s Comeback

Monaco’s squad, which boasts one of the strongest midfield units in Ligue 1, affords the club the luxury of easing Pogba back into action. Rather than rushing him onto the pitch, the club is focused on giving him the time he needs to regain peak fitness.

While Pogba had expressed a desire to feature in Monaco’s opening Ligue 1 match against Le Havre, the club has made it clear that they are taking a more measured approach. Thiago Scuro, Monaco’s CEO, confirmed to BBC that Pogba will not feature against Le Havre, adding, “We expect a three-month process,” which places the midfielder’s potential debut in early October.

The Bigger Picture for Monaco and Pogba

The decision to delay Pogba’s return has been well-received internally, with the club emphasizing the importance of ensuring the Frenchman’s long-term fitness. Monaco’s leadership and medical staff believe that rushing him back could jeopardize his progress and overall impact during the season.

Pogba, known for his charismatic personality, has already made a strong impression on his new teammates. His leadership and mentoring role have been valuable, particularly for the younger players in the squad as Monaco looks to balance youthful exuberance with experienced players.

What’s Next for Pogba and Monaco?

For now, Pogba will continue working with Monaco’s fitness team, aiming for a full recovery. Fans will have to wait until October to see the Frenchman back on the pitch, but the club’s decision to focus on his long-term health signals their commitment to making the most of his talent when he is fully ready.
