After a turbulent season at Wrexham, Paul Mullin is embracing a fresh start at Wigan Athletic. The 30-year-old striker opens up about his departure from the Welsh side, reflecting on his past season, and is determined to “prove himself right” in the Championship.

Paul Mullin has been candid about his emotions following his departure from Wrexham, calling his exit “sad” but embracing a new chapter with Wigan Athletic. The 30-year-old striker, who was once an instrumental part of Wrexham’s rise from the National League, has joined Wigan on loan for the season, marking what could be the end of his time with the Welsh club.

Struggles at Wrexham
Mullin’s time at Wrexham was a rollercoaster, especially as the club secured promotion to the Championship. However, the striker found himself on the sidelines for much of the campaign, watching as manager Phil Parkinson led the team to success. Reflecting on the season, Mullin admitted that it wasn’t as fruitful as he’d hoped. Despite scoring five goals in 12 starts, he felt he wasn’t part of a team that truly succeeded as he would have liked. Mullin went on to express his frustration with critics who focus on advanced statistics like xG, stating: “I don’t believe in xG… If that was the case, I only had an xG of four and managed to score three, so it weren’t such a bad season for those people.”

The Move to Wigan
Mullin’s decision to join Wigan is about starting fresh and moving forward in his career. The striker explained, “In life, you have many opportunities to change paths and go in different directions, and sometimes you’ve got to be brave to go and take the next step.” He expressed excitement for the future, highlighting that this move to League One could provide the stability and opportunities he needs to prove himself once more.

Legacy at Wrexham
While Mullin is moving on, his impact at Wrexham remains undeniable. Scoring 110 goals in 172 appearances, he played a pivotal role in the club’s two promotions from the National League. He will always be regarded as one of Wrexham’s greatest players, and despite being surplus to requirements at the club, Mullin’s legacy in the red shirt will not be forgotten.

What’s Next for Mullin at Wigan?
As Mullin settles into his new role at Wigan, his goal is clear: to play regularly and contribute to the club’s success. So far, he’s featured in three of Wigan’s five games, scoring in the Carabao Cup, but has yet to find the back of the net in League One. With Wigan in need of attacking firepower, Mullin will be hoping to make a mark and help propel his new side up the table.
