Who Could Replace Ruben Amorim? Ranking the Top 9 Candidates to Be the Next Manchester United Manager

Dyche and Southgate have both been tipped for the United job if Amorim leaves.

With Manchester United’s struggles continuing to mount, Ruben Amorim’s time at Old Trafford appears to be nearing its end. A humiliating penalty shootout defeat to League Two’s Grimsby Town has only intensified the pressure, with reports suggesting the Portuguese manager is on the brink of being sacked. As speculation heats up, several high-profile — and some surprising — names have emerged as potential successors. Here’s a breakdown of nine realistic (and not-so-realistic) contenders for the United hot seat.

9. Jurgen Klopp – A Fantasy Appointment
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown sparked controversy in June when he floated Jurgen Klopp as a possible replacement. While acknowledging Klopp’s pedigree, Keown suggested that United “could do a lot worse.” Realistically though, the former Liverpool manager is not only beloved at Anfield but has strongly hinted that he’s stepping away from management altogether. Despite his credentials, the idea of Klopp crossing enemy lines remains implausible.

8. Sean Dyche – Structure Over Star Power?
In a left-field take, Charlie Austin suggested Sean Dyche could be the man to bring structure and grit to Manchester United. Pointing to his work at Everton and Burnley, Austin emphasized Dyche’s ability to instill discipline. However, convincing a global fanbase — and United’s shareholders — that Dyche is the long-term answer to the club’s decade-long decline would be an uphill battle.

7. Marco Silva – The Sensible Option
Fulham boss Marco Silva has quietly emerged as a dark horse. After recently holding United to a 1-1 draw, the Portuguese coach is among the bookmakers’ favorites. At 48, Silva brings a respectable resume and tactical adaptability, though he may not ignite excitement among fans seeking a marquee appointment. Still, his experience and Premier League familiarity make him a credible candidate.

6. Michael Carrick – A Familiar Face for a Temporary Fix
Former United midfielder Michael Carrick had a mixed managerial stint at Middlesbrough, guiding the club to a playoff finish before being dismissed after a disappointing follow-up season. While he lacks top-tier experience, Carrick could be a short-term solution if Amorim exits without a successor lined up. His deep ties to United could earn him a brief caretaker role.

5. Kieran McKenna – The Rising Star with United Roots
Having worked under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Kieran McKenna is no stranger to the Manchester United setup. His managerial stock rose sharply after leading Ipswich Town to back-to-back promotions. Although Ipswich’s fall from the Premier League has tempered the hype, McKenna remains a long-term prospect United may revisit if he continues to impress.

4. Zinedine Zidane – The Wildcard Waiting in the Wings
Zidane hasn’t managed since his second Real Madrid stint ended in 2021, but his name frequently resurfaces in major managerial vacancies. While he’s widely believed to be holding out for the France national team job, United’s global stature could tempt the French icon. His past success managing big egos would be useful at Old Trafford, but doubts linger over whether he’d thrive without a squad like the Galácticos.

3. Andoni Iraola – INEOS’ Hidden Gem
Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola is reportedly on INEOS’ radar as a potential successor. The Spaniard has done impressive work, steering the Cherries to midtable safety despite limited resources and regular key departures. His tactical acumen and potential upside could appeal to the club’s new leadership, especially if they opt for a fresh, progressive direction.

2. Oliver Glasner – A Pragmatic Pick with Proven Success
Currently in charge at Crystal Palace, Oliver Glasner is another coach reportedly admired by the INEOS group. After winning the FA Cup and navigating a turbulent summer at Selhurst Park, Glasner has grown increasingly frustrated with the club’s limited ambitions. His contract expires next summer, which means United could secure him for a modest fee. His blend of discipline and tactical structure could bring stability to Old Trafford.

1. Gareth Southgate – The Favourite for a Reason
Top of the list is England manager Gareth Southgate, who came close to taking over at United last summer. A favorite of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Southgate is viewed as someone capable of calming the chaos and rebuilding culture at the club. However, his cautious style and failure to win silverware with England could make him a polarizing choice among supporters. Still, his steady hand and experience managing egos might be exactly what United needs.
