Article:

Michael Owen has come under fire for questioning Harry Kane’s decision to swap Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich in 2023, with former Bayern and Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann insisting that chasing trophies outweighs individual scoring records.

Owen’s Claim

The ex-England striker recently argued that Kane was “nuts” to leave Spurs when he was just 47 goals short of Alan Shearer’s historic Premier League goalscoring record. Many believed the England captain would eventually surpass Shearer’s 260-goal tally if he had stayed in north London.

Kane’s Response on the Pitch

Since moving to Germany, Kane has emphatically silenced doubts. The striker has netted 91 goals in just 100 appearances for Bayern, lifting the Bundesliga title in 2024-25 and adding a Super Cup at the start of the new season. For a player once accused of being “trophyless,” the move has transformed his career narrative.

Hamann’s Rebuttal

Hamann, speaking in association with Grosvenor Casino, dismissed Owen’s view and sided firmly with Kane’s decision:

I heard what Michael Owen said the other day, that he didn’t understand why he’s gone to Germany… For me, a trophy would always be a lot more important than individual honours. If you say to me, ‘You can be the Premier League all-time top scorer’, or ‘You have two, three, five trophies in the cabinet at the end of your career’, I would always take the trophies.

The German added that while records are impressive, players are ultimately remembered for the silverware they help their teams secure.

What’s Next for Kane?

At 32 years old, Kane remains under contract with Bayern until 2027. While speculation persists about a possible Premier League return or even a move to Barcelona, the England captain has made it clear he values team success over personal accolades — and has no regrets about leaving Tottenham.
