Ruben Amorim faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s turbulent start to the 2024/25 season has cast a spotlight on head coach Ruben Amorim, whose future at Old Trafford is already under serious scrutiny. With just one win in the opening five matches and key doubts emerging within the dressing room, reports suggest that removing the Portuguese tactician could come at a steep financial cost—potentially complicating any decision to part ways.

Mounting Pressure on Amorim After Disappointing Start
After replacing Erik ten Hag in the summer, Ruben Amorim was expected to usher in a new era at United. However, the early signs have been far from encouraging. The team has struggled to adapt to his preferred 3-4-3 system, which has left them vulnerable defensively and blunt in attack. As a result, the Red Devils sit in a disappointing position just weeks into the season.

Amorim currently ranks as the second favourite to be the next Premier League manager dismissed, with this weekend’s high-stakes clash against Chelsea potentially serving as a turning point. Another defeat could deepen the crisis and raise serious questions about his long-term viability.

Staggering £12 Million Clause Complicates Potential Dismissal
According to The Daily Mail, United would be required to pay Amorim an eye-watering £12 million if they terminate his contract within its first year. Despite public statements made by Amorim in May suggesting he would forgo compensation if he was no longer wanted, sources believe a payout would indeed be enforced.

The financial implications of a sacking have reportedly made the club’s hierarchy hesitant, particularly given the long-term strategy they hoped Amorim would implement. United are said to be “refusing to panic” and still view certain performance metrics as signs of progress, even if the results and performances on the pitch tell a different story.

Squad Discontent and Leadership Concerns Emerge
More worrying for United fans is the apparent disconnect between Amorim and the players. Several insiders reportedly believe the Portuguese coach lacks the leadership presence expected at a club of this magnitude. Concerns have been raised about his failure to visibly motivate the team during matches and his tendency to retreat during challenging moments.

Additionally, players are allegedly growing skeptical of his tactical setup, which many feel is ill-suited to the squad’s strengths. His emotional volatility—highlighted by his minimal post-match media availability following the recent derby loss—has also sparked concern behind the scenes.

Possible Replacements Being Considered, but Club Holding Off for Now
Should United choose to move on from Amorim, several potential successors are already being linked to the role. Fulham’s Marco Silva, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola are all reportedly under consideration.

Still, for the time being, United’s leadership is choosing to stay the course, at least publicly. With major fixtures looming, the pressure is on Amorim to turn things around quickly—both in terms of results and locker room unity.
