Liverpool appear to have the upper hand in the pursuit of Marc Guehi, with the Crystal Palace defender reportedly determined to join the Reds. Chelsea have now stepped aside in the transfer battle, clearing the way for Liverpool to make another move—possibly as early as January.

Guehi Set on Anfield Switch
Crystal Palace center-back Marc Guehi has emerged as a key target for Liverpool, and the 24-year-old seems to have his heart set on a switch to Anfield. According to reports, the England international was undergoing a medical with Liverpool during the final stages of the summer transfer window before the deal unexpectedly collapsed. Despite the late breakdown, the Merseyside club remains interested and could reignite talks in the January window.

Chelsea End Pursuit Amid Player’s Preference
While several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, had been monitoring Guehi, it now appears that Chelsea have withdrawn from the race. Journalist Simon Phillips reported that the Blues have “pretty much walked” away from the deal, acknowledging Guehi’s firm desire to join Liverpool. Despite widespread admiration for the defender within Stamford Bridge, the player reportedly had no interest in returning to his former club.

Arne Slot Addresses Transfer Disappointment
Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the club’s failed attempt to land Guehi, describing it as a “disappointment” during an appearance on the One on One podcast. Slot emphasized the quality already within his squad but admitted that Guehi was a player Liverpool had genuinely hoped to sign. “We have so many good players, but when an opportunity arises to bring in someone of real quality, we try to make it happen,” Slot said. “Of course, it didn’t work out this time, and that was disappointing for us—and I’m sure for the player as well.”

What’s Next for Liverpool and Guehi?
Although the summer window didn’t produce the desired outcome, Liverpool may still return for Guehi in January. There’s also the possibility of waiting until next summer, especially if Palace lower their valuation or if Guehi becomes available on a free transfer. However, delaying the move could invite renewed competition from top-tier clubs.
