Gary Neville didn’t hold back in his latest Sky Sports analysis, naming Gianluigi Donnarumma as a standout presence between the sticks for Manchester City. The former Manchester United defender drew a sharp comparison between Donnarumma and Arsenal’s David Raya following a tense 1-1 draw between the Premier League heavyweights. Neville made it clear: if he were in Pep Guardiola’s shoes, there’s no way he’d pick Raya over City’s new Italian giant.
Donnarumma’s Arrival Adds Steel to City’s Back Line
Manchester City secured the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain for £26 million late in the summer window, filling the void left by Ederson’s move to Fenerbahce. Though James Trafford initially featured in City’s early matches after arriving from Burnley for £27 million, it’s Donnarumma who has now taken center stage in goal.
The 6ft 5in goalkeeper brought with him an impressive résumé—Euro 2020 winner with Italy, a Champions League medal from PSG, and years of top-level experience despite being only 26. His physical dominance and commanding presence have already begun to make an impact on City’s defensive solidity.
Neville: “I Wouldn’t Pick Raya Over Donnarumma”
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at the Etihad, Neville gave a glowing assessment of Donnarumma’s influence.
“You look at Donnarumma—he’s an absolute animal,” Neville said. “He’s just big. When he comes out, attackers have second thoughts because they know they’re going to feel it.”
The pundit praised Donnarumma’s assertiveness, comparing him to iconic goalkeepers like Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. While acknowledging David Raya’s quality, Neville made his preference clear.
“I like Alisson. I like Raya. But I wouldn’t pick Raya over Donnarumma—or Alisson. I’ve always liked goalkeepers who dominate their area. Donnarumma fits that mold perfectly.”
Neville added that the Italian’s early performances for City show he’s already making a difference. “He makes saves, he commands his box, he’s aggressive in the right way. Mistakes will happen, but overall, he does the right things.”
Arsenal Need to “Take the Handbrake Off,” Says Neville
While praising City’s new shot-stopper, Neville didn’t shy away from critiquing Arsenal and Mikel Arteta’s tactical approach. Despite Gabriel Martinelli’s late equalizer salvaging a point, Neville was disappointed with Arsenal’s cautious setup.
He questioned Arteta’s team selection, particularly the choice to start Leandro Trossard and Mikel Merino, suggesting it showed a lack of boldness.
“My issue with Arsenal is whether Arteta truly backs his players to take control in big games,” Neville explained. “His half-time substitutions tell you it wasn’t working. When you’re changing two players at the break, you’ve essentially wasted 45 minutes.”
He called on Arsenal to show more intent if they’re serious about challenging for the title. “They’re great to watch, but it’s time to take the handbrake off.”
