Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres Wins Gerd Muller Award as Europe’s Best Striker – Fans React with Shock

Arsenal’s new signing Viktor Gyokeres has been crowned Europe’s best striker after winning the prestigious Gerd Muller Award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. While his record-breaking season at Sporting CP and for Sweden earned him the accolade, many fans on social media were left stunned by the decision.

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has been named the winner of the Gerd Muller Award, officially crowning him Europe’s best striker at the Ballon d’Or 2025 ceremony. The Swedish forward earned the honor after a record-breaking year with Sporting CP and his national team, though the announcement has sparked heated debate across football circles.

Gyokeres’ Record-Breaking Season

The 26-year-old enjoyed a phenomenal 2024/25 campaign, scoring 54 goals in 52 games across all competitions for Sporting CP and Sweden. His goals fired Sporting to a Primeira Liga title and the Taça de Portugal, while he also scooped the league’s top scorer award and was named Player of the Year.

His exploits earned him a £55 million summer move to Arsenal, where he has already opened his account with three goals in five Premier League appearances.

Social Media Reacts: Praise and Criticism

Despite the numbers, the decision to hand Gyokeres the award has divided fans.

  • A Manchester City supporter account wrote: “Viktor Gyokeres winning the Gerd Muller trophy. Football is falling off.”
  • Another fan added: “Gyokeres over Kane for best striker is actually bloody mental.”
  • An Arsenal fan celebrated, tweeting: “Best player in the world! I want all Spurs fans to call him Sir Viktor Gyokeres from now on.”

The split reaction highlights the growing debate over how football defines greatness — consistency at the very top level versus statistical dominance in less celebrated leagues.

Gyokeres’ Response

Speaking during his acceptance speech, Gyokeres expressed pride at receiving the honor:

“To be able to stand here is amazing. I was always hungry for goals. It’s an honor to receive this award. It has been a tough journey, but I stand here today ready for a new stage in my career at Arsenal, to create some special memories.”

The Challenge Ahead at Arsenal

While his award recognizes past success, Gyokeres now faces the challenge of proving himself in the Premier League. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has admitted the striker still needs improved service from his teammates to maximize his goal-scoring ability.

With three goals in five matches, Gyokeres’ start has been solid, but expectations are sky-high following his Ballon d’Or recognition. For Arsenal fans, the hope is that the Swede can replicate his Sporting heroics in North London and silence the doubters.
