Despite securing a thrilling 2-1 win over Newcastle United, Arsenal star Bukayo Saka expressed clear frustration with the officiating—specifically a controversial VAR decision that overturned an early penalty. While the Gunners walked away with all three points, Saka’s post-match comments highlighted growing tensions over the use of video technology in the Premier League.

Controversial VAR Call Sparks Frustration
Arsenal’s clash with Newcastle at the Emirates took a dramatic turn in the first half when referee Jarred Gillett initially awarded the hosts a penalty following a collision between Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope and forward Viktor Gyokeres. The decision, however, was short-lived.

After a lengthy VAR review, Gillett reversed the call, determining the challenge didn’t warrant a spot-kick. The reversal didn’t sit well with Saka, who questioned both the clarity of the decision and the purpose of VAR itself.

“For me, if we have VAR, it should be used only for clear and obvious errors,” said Saka. “The fact that it took so long to reach a conclusion proves it wasn’t that clear. These moments always seem to go against us.”

Late Gabriel Header Secures Arsenal Victory
While the penalty drama stirred controversy, Arsenal kept their focus on the pitch. The breakthrough came late in the match when Gabriel Magalhães rose highest in the box to nod home the winning goal, sparking celebrations among the home fans.

The 2-1 result keeps Arsenal’s momentum alive as they continue to chase crucial points in the Premier League campaign. Despite the three points, Saka couldn’t hide his discontent with the VAR decision, though he ultimately acknowledged the importance of the victory.

“We got what we deserved in the end,” Saka added. “That’s why we’re all so happy. But the penalty incident—it’s just frustrating. Still, it doesn’t matter now, does it?”

Looking Ahead: Arsenal Face West Ham Next
Mikel Arteta’s side will now turn their attention to their upcoming fixture against West Ham United on Saturday, October 4. With the team showing resilience and attacking sharpness, fans will hope Arsenal can maintain their form—and avoid further refereeing drama.
