Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has delivered a harsh critique of the club’s current state under Ruben Amorim and the ownership of INEOS, describing a lack of soul and spirit at Old Trafford. With the Red Devils struggling early in the Premier League season, Rooney’s concerns underline the growing anxiety surrounding the club’s future.

Rooney Laments Man Utd’s Current Crisis

After Manchester United’s disappointing 3-1 loss to Brentford, which left the club 14th in the Premier League table after just six games, Rooney did not hold back in assessing the situation. The former striker openly questioned the direction under head coach Ruben Amorim, who is now facing mounting pressure amid rumors of potential dismissal. Despite reports that INEOS continues to back Amorim, Rooney emphasized the urgent need for a turnaround.

“No Faith” in Amorim as Pressure Mounts

Rooney expressed deep skepticism about Amorim’s ability to revive Manchester United’s fortunes. Speaking to BBC Sport, he insisted significant changes are necessary — whether that involves the manager, players, or both. “I am not seeing anything which is giving me any confidence, there needs to be big changes in my opinion,” Rooney said bluntly. He urged the club’s owners, particularly INEOS and Jim Ratcliffe, to take decisive action and do “whatever it takes” to restore the club’s glory.

A Club Missing Its Identity and Fighting Spirit

One of Rooney’s most damning observations was the perceived loss of character and passion within the squad. “I don’t recognise the whole football club. I don’t see players fighting, I don’t see character, I don’t see desire to win,” Rooney stated. He described attending games with the expectation of defeat or at best a draw, reflecting a pervasive atmosphere of defeatism. Beyond on-pitch performance, Rooney highlighted broader issues including the dismissal of long-serving staff, signaling a loss of the club’s foundational spirit.

A Call for Leadership and Clear Direction

Rooney made a strong plea for the owners to provide clarity and reassurance to a worried fanbase. He urged both the Glazers and INEOS minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to outline a clear vision for Manchester United’s future. “There needs to be a clear message from the owners,” Rooney said, noting that without direction, the club risks further decline. He also voiced concern for the youth academy, where his own children train, hoping the current turmoil doesn’t damage young talents coming through.

Looking Ahead: The Crucial Clash with Sunderland

With pressure mounting, Manchester United must find a way to bounce back quickly. Their next test comes at home against newly-promoted Sunderland, a match that Rooney suggests is vital if the club is to regain momentum and start restoring pride.
