Ruben Amorim is reportedly stunned by the level of scrutiny at Manchester United after their poor start to the season, with insiders fearing the Portuguese coach could resign before the club makes a decision on his future.

Ruben Amorim has been left shocked by what he sees as a “knee-jerk reaction” to Manchester United’s latest defeat, with insiders now fearing the manager could walk away before being sacked.

United’s 3-1 loss to Brentford means they have lost three of their opening six Premier League games while also crashing out of the League Cup to Grimsby Town, leaving Amorim under intense scrutiny just months into his tenure.

Amorim Surprised by Fallout

According to The i Paper, the Portuguese coach did not expect the volume of criticism directed at both him and the club after a string of poor results. The Brentford defeat was particularly damaging, with reports noting Amorim now holds the sixth-lowest points tally after 33 games of any Premier League manager in history.

Despite this, insiders claim the club still believes the former Sporting CP boss can turn things around. However, the constant speculation has raised fears that Amorim may consider resigning before being pushed.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is understood to want Amorim to see out the full season, but there is concern the 40-year-old could view the job as career-defining, especially if defeats continue to pile up.

Managerial Rumors Swirl

Reports have linked United with possible replacements, including Michael Carrick and Gareth Southgate, though club sources insist no shortlist has been drawn up. Carrick could be an interim solution if Amorim does depart, but INEOS remain keen to back their current coach for now.

The pressure is unlikely to ease soon. United’s next league clash against Sunderland has already been labeled a “must-win” before the international break, with the newly-promoted side in strong early form.

Amorim’s Response

After the Brentford defeat, Amorim remained calm when asked about his position:

I am never concerned about my job — I am not that kind of guy. It is not my decision. I will do the best I can every minute I am here.

The Portuguese boss also refused to blame his players despite their struggles, instead pointing to United’s failure to control the game:

We played the game the opponents wanted — first balls, second balls. We never settled the game down. We should do that more.

Defining Weeks Ahead

United face Sunderland before the break, but the real test looms on their return with a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool. The Reds are flying at the top of the table, and Amorim will need to inspire a huge turnaround to avoid another damaging defeat.

Last season, United managed a 2-2 draw at Anfield, but given their current struggles, a similar result this time would feel like a lifeline for both the players and their under-pressure manager.
