Mikel Arteta could face the sack if he doesn't win the Premier League title.
Mikel Arteta could face the sack if he doesn't win the Premier League title.

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has delivered a startling verdict on Mikel Arteta’s future, suggesting the Spaniard could be shown the door if the Gunners fail to clinch the Premier League crown this season. Despite heavy investment and growing expectations, the pressure is mounting on Arteta to finally deliver silverware after multiple near-misses.

Pires: “Change Is Coming If Arsenal Miss Out Again”
After finishing second to Liverpool last season—ten points adrift by the final whistle—Arsenal’s title drought extended yet again under Arteta’s reign. While the Gunners made strides, the dominance of Liverpool left Arsenal fans hungry for more. According to Pires, the time for excuses is over.

In an interview with Foot Mercato, the former French winger didn’t mince words about Arteta’s job security. “If Arsenal don’t win a trophy this year, the management will consider finding another coach,” he said. “He’s been there for five years and unfortunately, the title has eluded him.”

Big Summer Spending Increases the Stakes
Arsenal were among the Premier League’s busiest clubs in the summer transfer window, splashing out on eight new signings to strengthen their title push. High-profile additions like Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze, and Piero Hincapié have all bolstered the squad.

Pires emphasized that Arteta was backed fully by the board. “He made certain demands, which were met,” he explained. “Money was spent. Now the expectations are high.”

Tough Competition, But No Room for Excuses
While acknowledging the strength of rivals like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea, Pires insists Arsenal have the quality to end their title drought. “It’s not going to be easy,” he admitted, “but I think Arsenal holds the cards and have the players to win the title.”

Pires’ comments reflect the growing sentiment among fans and pundits: with resources, time, and talent all on Arteta’s side, this season must deliver more than just a top-four finish.

Gyökeres’ Premier League Transition: A Work in Progress
One of the most notable signings, Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, arrived for an initial £55 million fee with £8.7 million in potential bonuses. The former Sporting CP forward has scored three goals in eight appearances, but Pires believes the adjustment from Portugal to England has been tough.

“He was a goal machine in Portugal,” said Pires. “But the Premier League is a different beast. Defenders here are stronger, more physical. It’s not easy to adapt quickly, especially with the pressure Arsenal is under to win the title.”

Verdict: Make-Or-Break Season for Arteta
Arteta may have brought stability and style back to the Emirates, but patience is wearing thin. With financial backing and a squad stacked with talent, this season is shaping up to be a defining moment in his tenure.

Should Arsenal fall short again in their pursuit of Premier League glory, even loyal club figures like Pires believe a managerial shake-up is inevitable.

In an unexpected twist, Arsenal reportedly made a last-minute attempt to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich before ultimately securing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Despite the Gunners’ interest in the Portuguese midfielder, talks with Bayern fell short, leaving Mikel Arteta to focus on other key signings for his squad. Arsenal's Midfield Pursuit: Palhinha and Zubimendi Arsenal's primary target in this summer's transfer window was always Spain international Martin Zubimendi, with the Gunners completing a £60 million ($80 million) deal for the Real Sociedad star. However, Mikel Arteta's midfield hunt didn’t stop there. According to German outlet Bild, Arsenal made a surprise bid for Bayern Munich's Joao Palhinha before the German giants’ trip to the FIFA Club World Cup. Palhinha's Bundesliga Adventure and Potential Move Palhinha, who left Fulham for Bayern Munich in 2024 in a €48 million ($64 million) move, didn’t have the easiest debut season in Germany. Despite winning the Bundesliga title, the 30-year-old midfielder made only seven league starts and was sidelined for two months due to injury. Bayern Munich, reportedly, were willing to part ways with the Portuguese international for a fee of around £26 million ($35 million), a significant financial hit for the club. Arsenal saw the opportunity and made a play for the Portuguese star. However, the two clubs could not reach an agreement, with Arsenal eventually turning their focus toward Zubimendi, who was always their preferred option. The Bigger Picture: Arteta's Transfer Strategy Although Arsenal missed out on Palhinha, the Gunners’ transfer window has been far from quiet. Along with Zubimendi, Arteta has secured the signings of midfielder Christian Norgaard and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Arsenal are also looking to complete deals for Chelsea's Noni Madueke and Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres, further strengthening their squad in multiple areas. What’s Next for Arsenal? With Zubimendi now on board and other potential signings in the pipeline, Arsenal’s focus will shift to integrating these new players into Arteta's system. The Gunners are building a formidable squad for the upcoming season, and despite missing out on Palhinha, the club's recruitment strategy looks promising as they aim to continue challenging at the top of the Premier League.
