Ahead of a highly anticipated Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca took a moment to commend Liverpool’s strength and unity following the tragic loss of Diogo Jota. The emotional tribute from Maresca, who has experienced a similar heartbreak during his playing days, highlights the human side of football often overshadowed by results.
Maresca Applauds Liverpool’s Mental Fortitude
As Liverpool prepare to face Chelsea on Saturday evening, Maresca made it clear that recent setbacks on the pitch don’t tell the full story. Despite dropping points in recent matches against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, the Italian manager believes the Reds are showing immense strength amid a painful period.
Diogo Jota’s death in a car accident in July, alongside his brother André Silva, sent shockwaves through the football world. For Maresca, the tragedy hits close to home. The former midfielder was a teammate of Antonio Puerta at Sevilla, who passed away in 2007 after collapsing on the pitch during a match.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Maresca was visibly moved:
“I lived exactly the same situation 20 years ago. It’s incredibly hard, on the players, the staff, the entire club. When you come to training and see that empty place, it’s something that stays with you. That’s why I think Liverpool are doing not just well, but even better than that.

“Liverpool Are Still a Big Threat”
Despite Liverpool’s recent dip in form, Maresca dismissed any suggestion that this might be the right time to face the reigning champions.
“I don’t think it’s easier now just because they dropped points. Liverpool are always a big team, and it’s always a tough game,” he said.
“They’re showing incredible resilience. What they’ve done so far this season, considering the emotional burden, is simply fantastic.”
Chelsea’s Defensive Woes: Young Stars Ready to Step In
Maresca also addressed the growing concerns around Chelsea’s defensive options. With key players like Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, and Tosin Adarabioyo sidelined through injury, and Trevoh Chalobah suspended, the Blues may be forced to rely on youth.
Josh Acheampong, a promising talent from Chelsea’s academy, is in line for a potential start in central defence. The 19-year-old has already earned Maresca’s trust, having featured in earlier matches under similar circumstances.
“I’ve always trusted our young players, not just those we’ve signed, but those coming through the academy,” Maresca explained.
“Last season we gave minutes to Josh even when senior players were available. It’s not about necessity—it’s about belief. The same goes for Ty [George]. We’ll find the right solution.”
