Bayer Leverkusen is gearing up to challenge Bayern Munich’s dominance once again, with club insiders confident that recent changes have positioned them as serious title contenders. After a transformative summer, Leverkusen’s sports director Simon Rolfes shared his optimism, emphasizing that the club is building a foundation for sustained success.

A New Era After Alonso’s Triumphs

Following Bayer Leverkusen’s historic double win in 2024 under Xabi Alonso, the club faced a significant transition period. Rolfes describes the overhaul as more than just fine-tuning—it was a “huge rebuild” that demanded adaptation from new players both on and off the pitch. While stability is still evolving, Rolfes remains convinced the current squad contains the potential to grow into a championship-winning side over the next few seasons.

“The players are still settling in, but many have the talent to become world-class,” Rolfes noted. He sees room for continuous improvement as the team develops chemistry and gains experience in Germany’s top flight.

Raising Standards and Developing Talent

The success under Alonso raised expectations, but Rolfes is pragmatic about the challenges ahead. “We can’t just buy a title-winning team overnight; it’s a process that requires patience and development,” he explained. He praised the quality of new recruits, highlighting how Leverkusen’s improved stature now attracts players they wouldn’t have been able to sign five years ago.

Among the emerging talents, defenders Jarell Quansah and midfielder Malik Tillman stand out as future stars with the potential to reach elite levels. Rolfes also pointed to Alonso’s move to Real Madrid as a testament to the club’s ability to nurture world-class talent. The relationship between Leverkusen and Alonso remains strong, with regular communication between club management and the former coach.

Confidence Restored Under Kasper Hjulmand

The season’s start under Alonso’s successor, Erik ten Hag, was less than ideal. “We lacked confidence and cohesion,” admitted Rolfes. However, with Kasper Hjulmand now at the helm, the mood has shifted. Rolfes praised Hjulmand’s communication skills, clear tactics, and close relationship with his coaching staff and players as key factors in stabilizing the team.

Rolfes’ Commitment and Future Ambitions

While Rolfes is deeply invested in Leverkusen’s growth, he remains open about his own future. “I love working here and seeing the club’s progress, but retiring as a player doesn’t mean I’ll retire as a manager here,” he said, leaving the door open for new opportunities while focusing on Leverkusen’s current journey.
