Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has stirred the Premier League debate by naming Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali as a more complete midfielder than Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo. Despite Rice and Caicedo often being hailed among the league’s elite, Scholes believes Tonali’s blend of technical skill, control, and athleticism gives him the edge.
Scholes Backs Tonali Over Big-Money Rivals
Since his £55 million move from AC Milan in 2023, Sandro Tonali has quickly become a fan favorite at St James’ Park. The Italian international has made a strong impact under Eddie Howe, showcasing his versatility and quality in both attacking and defensive phases of play. Tonali’s performances helped Newcastle secure a Champions League berth, further cementing his growing reputation in English football.
Paul Scholes, speaking on The Overlap, offered high praise for the 24-year-old, stating that he would choose Tonali over both Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo. While acknowledging their strengths, Scholes emphasized his preference for midfielders who can dictate the tempo of a match and contribute offensively.
“I Prefer the Controlling Types” – Scholes Breaks Down His Choice
Discussing Caicedo, Scholes said:
“He’s one of the best at what he does, which is breaking up play. But I prefer midfielders who play with a bit more style and can score goals more consistently.”
Although Caicedo impressed with a standout performance in the Club World Cup and a spectacular goal recently, Scholes suggested that such moments are the exception rather than the rule for the Ecuadorian.
He added praise for Alexis Mac Allister, describing the Liverpool midfielder as someone who “controlled a lot of games” last season and highlighting how much the Reds miss his presence when he’s not playing.
Tonali Over Rice? Scholes Explains the Difference
When pressed further, Scholes stood by his preference for Tonali, even when compared to England star Declan Rice.
“I really like Rice, don’t get me wrong. He’s got everything, but sometimes he takes too many touches and tries to be flashier than he needs to be,” Scholes explained. “He can do it all, but he doesn’t do it enough. I prefer Tonali, but they’re both good players.”
Scholes’ remarks are sure to spark discussion, especially given the hefty transfer fees paid for both Rice (£105m) and Caicedo (£115m), making them two of the most expensive midfielders in Premier League history.
Howe Echoes Praise for His Midfield Maestro
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has also spoken highly of Tonali, drawing comparisons to Italian legend Andrea Pirlo—though he insists there’s more to the player than just his appearance.
“There were definite links to Pirlo – and it’s not just the hair,” Howe joked. “What sets Tonali apart is his ability to combine tactical intelligence, technical quality, and physical power. He’s not just elegant on the ball; he’s a runner, a defender, and an enforcer.”
Howe noted Tonali’s increasing defensive contributions, particularly his work rate in tracking runners and breaking up play, which have made him an indispensable figure in Newcastle’s midfield setup.
A New Midfield Standard?
With Tonali continuing to thrive in the Premier League, Scholes’ endorsement adds another layer to the growing appreciation of the Italian midfielder. While Rice and Caicedo remain top-tier talents, Tonali’s all-around ability and tactical maturity have clearly left a lasting impression on one of the game’s greats.
