Real Madrid Hit by Fresh Blow as Dean Huijsen Withdraws from Spain Squad with Muscle Injury

Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen has pulled out of Spain’s squad for the October World Cup qualifiers after suffering a muscle injury. The setback adds to Xabi Alonso’s growing defensive concerns, with both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal already sidelined.

Dean Huijsen Ruled Out of Spain’s October Qualifiers

Real Madrid centre-back Dean Huijsen has withdrawn from the Spain national team for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria after sustaining a muscular injury. The 19-year-old defender, who joined Madrid from Bournemouth during the summer, has been an ever-present figure in Xabi Alonso’s lineup this season, quickly establishing himself as a key pillar in Los Blancos’ back line.

Huijsen’s withdrawal was confirmed after medical tests conducted by Real Madrid’s medical department revealed a muscular problem in his left leg’s soleus muscle.

Real Madrid Confirm Injury Diagnosis

In an official club statement, Madrid said:

“Following tests carried out on our player, Dean Huijsen, today and assessed by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury to the soleus muscle in his left leg. Further updates will follow.”

The announcement comes just days after Huijsen played the full 90 minutes in Madrid’s 3-1 victory over Villarreal, where he appeared to suffer discomfort late in the match. Although the injury is not believed to be long-term, he will miss Spain’s crucial qualifiers scheduled for October 11 and 14.

Huijsen’s Importance Under Xabi Alonso

Since joining from Bournemouth, Huijsen has become one of the standout performers under Xabi Alonso, who has relied heavily on the young defender’s composure and ball-playing ability. Apart from the Espanyol fixture — which he missed due to suspension — Huijsen has featured in every competitive match for Madrid this season, showcasing maturity beyond his years.

His absence will be a significant blow to Alonso’s plans, particularly given the manager’s reliance on a high defensive line and structured build-up play from the back.

Madrid’s Defensive Problems Deepen

Huijsen’s injury compounds Madrid’s ongoing defensive woes. Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal remain out with injuries, leaving Alonso short of options in defence. With the club currently leading La Liga by two points, managing fitness and squad depth has become increasingly vital as Madrid balance domestic and European commitments.

The timing could not be worse, as Alonso’s side prepare for their next league fixture against Getafe on October 19, just days after the international break.

Real Madrid’s Hope for Swift Recovery

While no official recovery timeline has been provided, Real Madrid are optimistic that Huijsen’s injury will not sideline him for an extended period. The player is expected to undergo rehabilitation immediately at Valdebebas, with the club’s medical staff monitoring his progress closely.

Given his rapid rise and reliability since joining, Huijsen’s return will be crucial to maintaining Madrid’s title push. Alonso, who has praised the defender’s maturity and tactical awareness, will hope to have him back in contention before the team’s busy end-of-month schedule.

Huijsen’s setback is another reminder of how demanding the early season has been for Real Madrid — a campaign defined as much by resilience as by results.
