Chelsea’s pursuit of Dutch defensive prodigy Jorrel Hato has hit a stumbling block, with Ajax turning down an opening €40 million offer. The 19-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League side, but Ajax are standing firm on their valuation as negotiations continue.

Chelsea’s First Move Falls Short

Chelsea launched their opening bid for Jorrel Hato, believed to be around €40 million, as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season. The bid mirrors the fee Arsenal paid for fellow Ajax graduate Jurrien Timber, suggesting Chelsea hoped to strike a similar deal.

However, Ajax were quick to reject the offer. According to sources in the Netherlands, the Amsterdam giants are holding out for a fee in the region of €55–€60 million, reflecting Hato’s growing importance and potential.

Ajax Balancing Business and Ambition

While Ajax acknowledge Hato’s desire to take the next step in his career, the club is equally determined to retain key talent as they gear up for their first UEFA Champions League appearance since 2022. The Dutch side views Hato as a cornerstone of their squad, especially as they aim to compete on Europe’s biggest stage once again.

Despite the ongoing transfer saga, Ajax have reportedly tabled a counteroffer, signaling their willingness to negotiate—but only on their terms.

Hato Already Set on Stamford Bridge Move

Although the clubs are yet to agree on a fee, the player himself is ready to make the leap. Hato has already reached a personal agreement with Chelsea, according to his agent, Humphry Nijman, who confirmed that formal talks between the two clubs are ongoing.

The young center-back made his senior debut for Ajax at just 16 and has since carved out a place in club history by becoming the youngest player ever to reach 100 appearances.

Long-Term Contract, Short-Term Uncertainty

Hato remains under contract with Ajax until the summer of 2028, giving the Dutch club significant leverage in negotiations. However, with Chelsea pushing to get the deal done and Hato eager for a Premier League move, the situation remains fluid as the summer window progresses.
