Fifteen-year-old Max Dowman caught the eye on his senior Arsenal debut during a 1-0 friendly win over AC Milan, with Mikel Arteta praising the youngster’s maturity but staying cautious about outlining immediate first-team plans.
Mikel Arteta is not one to hand out senior debuts lightly, especially to teenagers. But during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over AC Milan in Singapore, the Gunners boss made a bold statement by introducing not one, but two 15-year-olds — Max Dowman and Marli Salmon — into the fray. And while both prospects handled the occasion with composure, it was Dowman who stole the spotlight.
The highly rated midfielder is no stranger to fast-tracking. Already a regular with England’s U17s, Dowman finished last season with a staggering 15 goals in 15 league games for Arsenal’s U18s — an eye-catching return for a player still years away from legally driving. Yet, it’s not just his numbers that have Arsenal insiders buzzing; it’s how effortlessly he translates youth-level dominance into higher stakes.
Arteta, clearly impressed by the teen’s composure and technical quality, praised Dowman’s readiness for the occasion. “He’s only 15, but he didn’t look out of place,” the Spaniard noted. “That comes down to the environment the team creates. When a young player feels safe and confident, the talent naturally comes through — and Max has plenty of it.”
Still, Arteta was careful not to get ahead of himself when asked about Dowman’s role in the upcoming season. “We don’t know yet,” he admitted. “The kids are around the team and learning the dynamics, especially the physical demands. That’s the foundation. Once that’s there, they have to earn their place.”
Dowman’s cameo against Milan wasn’t just symbolic — it was a clear signal that Arsenal’s youth-first philosophy remains central to the club’s identity. While there may not be a mapped-out plan for his integration just yet, the opportunity to train and play alongside senior professionals will be invaluable.

The next step in Arsenal’s pre-season takes them to a clash with Newcastle on July 27, before a historic North London derby in foreign territory against Spurs. Whether Dowman features again remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Arsenal have something special in the making.
