Benjamin Mendy‘s short stint at FC Zurich ends after just eight games, with the club citing his poor performances and off-field conduct as key factors. Now, the former Manchester City star is once again searching for a new club.
Benjamin Mendy, the former Manchester City defender, has been released by FC Zurich after just eight appearances, following criticism of his performance and off-field behavior. The 31-year-old, who joined the Swiss side in February, leaves the club a year before his contract was due to expire.
What Happened?
Mendy’s tenure at Zurich was short-lived, with the club citing dissatisfaction with his performances, especially after a poor showing in a 4-0 defeat to Basel in April. Mendy allegedly partied just hours after the loss, further angering club officials.
In a statement, Zurich said: “FC Zurich announces that the contract with French defender Benjamin Mendy has been terminated by mutual consent. He is leaving the club with immediate effect. FCZ wishes Benjamin Mendy all the best for his private and sporting future.”
Zurich’s manager, Ricardo Moniz, also expressed frustration: “Mendy didn’t perform as expected of a player of his calibre. His physical condition isn’t up to what we expect from a player in this league. After a 4–0 defeat, you can’t afford to do that to the supporters.”
The Bigger Picture
Mendy’s career has been plagued by controversy. After his suspension by Manchester City in August 2021 and subsequent charges of rape and sexual assault, he was acquitted of all charges in July 2023. Following his tribunal victory over unpaid wages against City, Mendy signed with Lorient in 2023 but has played only 23 times since then. His latest setback at Zurich has added another chapter to his turbulent career.
What’s Next for Mendy?
Mendy now finds himself on the lookout for a new club once again. With his career in limbo, it remains uncertain whether the former Monaco and Marseille man will find a new home before the new season begins.
