Tragic Incident at Amex Stadium

Brighton & Hove Albion FC has confirmed the heartbreaking news of the passing of a 72-year-old fan who tragically fell ill during their Premier League clash with Fulham at Amex Stadium. The incident occurred during the second half of the 1-1 draw on Saturday, when the supporter collapsed in the East Stand Upper.

Despite the immediate response from emergency services and club staff, who worked tirelessly to provide medical assistance, the fan unfortunately passed away. The club has expressed deep condolences to the fan’s family and pledged ongoing support to both the affected family and those who witnessed the distressing event.

Brighton’s Statement of Support

In an official statement, Brighton CEO Paul Barber shared the club’s sympathy:
“This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon, and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life. While the gentleman concerned is foremost in our minds, we are also aware that it was an emotional and distressing situation for staff and supporters in the direct vicinity. Over the coming days, we will ensure those affected are properly supported.”

Medical Response and Efforts

The incident prompted an immediate response from the South East Coast Ambulance Service, St John’s Ambulance, Sussex Police, and the club’s crowd doctor. Brighton’s medical team, alongside club stewards, provided prolonged CPR and utilized a defibrillator in an attempt to stabilize the fan.

Dr. Rob Galloway, the club’s doctor and emergency medicine consultant, also acknowledged the efforts:
“Firstly, I would like to convey my condolences and sympathies to the gentleman’s family and friends. It was a tragic outcome, but from an emergency response perspective, the medical care was exemplary, and the professionalism of club stewards and Sussex Police provided the medical team with the best possible working environment.”

Brighton’s Continued Support

Brighton emphasized that the fan had the highest chance of survival through prompt treatment at the stadium rather than attempting to move him to the hospital, which could have caused further complications. The club has also ensured that staff and supporters who were affected by the distressing situation are offered support, including resources from Samaritans, YoungMinds, and Shout.

The tragic loss serves as a somber reminder of how football, as a sport, brings together a community of fans, players, and staff who experience both the highs and the lows together. Brighton’s commitment to supporting those impacted by the event highlights the importance of compassion in such difficult times.
