De Zerbi Sends Warning Over Greenwood's Future Amid Transfer Speculation

Mason Greenwood’s rise in Ligue 1 has attracted interest from top clubs, but Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi insists that while it’s easy to leave the French giants, finding a similar platform elsewhere could be much harder.

Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has issued a stern warning regarding Mason Greenwood’s future, claiming it may be “easy to leave Marseille,” but finding another club with the same platform and passion will be much harder. Greenwood’s sensational debut season in Ligue 1, where he scored 21 league goals and shared the Golden Boot with Ousmane Dembele, has drawn attention from clubs in Spain and Saudi Arabia. However, De Zerbi remains adamant that Marseille are not willing to let their star striker go without a fight.

De Zerbi’s Message on Greenwood’s Future

Speaking ahead of Marseille’s season opener against Rennes, De Zerbi reiterated the importance of keeping his core players, including Greenwood, who has been instrumental in the club’s attacking lineup. The manager said, “I don’t think they’ll leave. Keeping players like Balerdi, Rulli, Rabiot, Hojbjerg, and Greenwood is important for OM and for them. It’s easy to leave Marseille, but difficult to find a similar place.”

The Reality of Greenwood’s Rising Value

Greenwood’s exceptional form last season has made him one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe. While Marseille are clearly reluctant to part with him, the club’s hierarchy faces the challenge of keeping hold of their star man amidst rising interest. There is a clause in Greenwood’s contract, allowing Manchester United to claim 50% of any transfer fee should he leave Marseille.

Greenwood’s Impact at Marseille

Greenwood’s debut season in Ligue 1 exceeded all expectations, as he not only contributed 21 goals but also established himself as one of the league’s most dangerous forwards. His success at Marseille has mirrored his time at Getafe, where he previously showed off his goal-scoring ability and flair for creativity.

What’s Next for Marseille?

While De Zerbi’s comments aim to quell growing speculation about Greenwood’s future, the reality is that the transfer window often brings surprises. With Greenwood‘s market value climbing rapidly, Marseille may eventually face pressure to sell should a significant bid materialize.

For now, all eyes will be on Marseille as they open their Ligue 1 campaign against Rennes at Roazhon Park on Friday evening. Greenwood’s performance in the match will likely be scrutinized further, especially with the transfer speculation surrounding his future heating up.
