Spain’s women’s national team has named a powerful 23-player squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League semi-finals, headlined by the much-anticipated returns of star forward Jenni Hermoso and veteran defender Mapi León. New head coach Sonia Bermúdez begins her tenure with a clear message—Spain is ready to compete at full strength.

Hermoso and León Return to the National Stage
Jenni Hermoso, the country’s all-time leading scorer with 57 international goals, is back in the squad after a year-long absence. The 35-year-old striker last featured for La Roja in 2023 and was notably absent from the team under former coach Montse Tomé. Hermoso’s inclusion is not just a boost on the pitch but also a symbolic moment following the high-profile controversy involving former federation president Luis Rubiales.

Joining her is Mapi León, the Barcelona defender who hasn’t worn the national team shirt since UEFA Women’s EURO 2022. Like Hermoso, León had been sidelined from international duties during Tomé’s reign but is now re-integrated under Bermúdez’s leadership.

A New Era Under Sonia Bermúdez
Sonia Bermúdez, formerly the coach of Spain’s Under-23 women’s team, now takes charge of the senior side at a pivotal time. Her first major challenge will be guiding the reigning world champions through a two-legged Nations League semi-final against Sweden. The first leg will take place at La Rosaleda Stadium in Málaga on October 24, with the return match set for October 28 at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg.

Bermúdez’s appointment signals a fresh start for a squad that’s recently endured internal turbulence and leadership changes, despite on-field success.

Key Fixture Details and What’s at Stake
Spain’s matchup with Sweden is one of two semi-final ties, with the other featuring Germany against France. Both sets of matches will be held on the same dates, October 24 and 28. The winners will progress to the Nations League final, adding another competitive layer for Europe’s top national teams ahead of future international tournaments.

Hermoso’s Comeback: More Than Just Football
Jenni Hermoso’s return is particularly poignant. After playing a crucial role in Spain’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup triumph, Hermoso found herself at the center of controversy when ex-RFEF president Luis Rubiales forcibly kissed her during the post-match celebrations in Sydney. Rubiales has since been convicted of sexual assault, and Hermoso’s comeback represents not only resilience but a broader shift in Spanish football’s cultural landscape.

With two icons reinstated and a new manager at the helm, Spain is poised for a high-stakes showdown against Sweden. The Nations League semi-final offers a key test for the reigning world champions—and a chance to turn the page on recent off-field drama.
