Frimpong’s Versatility on Display as Reds Prepare for Life After Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool’s summer rebuild is already turning heads, and Jeremie Frimpong is at the heart of the excitement. In a behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly against Stoke City, the Dutch international was deployed in an unexpected attacking role, sparking optimism among fans and raising intriguing tactical possibilities for the 2025–26 campaign.

Signed from Bayer Leverkusen to help reshape Liverpool’s defense following the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Frimpong’s debut in red is already suggesting he may offer far more than just defensive cover.

New Role, Same Impact

While Frimpong arrived at Anfield as a wingback—a position he thrived in under Xabi Alonso—head coach Arne Slot opted to test the 23-year-old higher up the pitch during Liverpool’s 5–0 win over Stoke City at the AXA Training Centre. The move paid off.

Stationed on the right wing with Conor Bradley tucked in behind him, Frimpong showcased his trademark acceleration and creative flair, linking up superbly with the Northern Irishman. Social media buzzed with praise as fans drew comparisons to the kind of dynamic wing play seen at Paris Saint-Germain last season, particularly the tandem of Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.

An Evolving Tactical Blueprint Under Arne Slot

Slot’s tactical approach is already showing signs of breaking with the past. Liverpool, who traditionally favored a back four anchored by central defenders, may now lean into a more fluid system, with Frimpong and Milos Kerkez bombing forward from wide positions.

This stylistic evolution could signal a broader shift in the Premier League, with explosive fullbacks and wingbacks becoming essential to breaking down compact defensive setups. Frimpong’s adaptability—capable of operating as both a defender and winger—makes him an invaluable asset in this transition.

A Potential AFCON Contingency Plan

Frimpong’s versatility could become even more crucial come January, when star winger Mohamed Salah is expected to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt. With Liverpool often struggling with depth during major international tournaments, Frimpong may be a surprise candidate to help fill the attacking void.

While it’s speculative for now, his impressive showing against Stoke has at least opened the door for a potential short-term switch to the frontline—something that could prove decisive in keeping Liverpool’s momentum alive mid-season.

Pressure to Perform in a Pivotal Season

There’s no question Frimpong faces immense expectations. Replacing Alexander-Arnold—one of Liverpool’s most influential players in the Klopp era—is no small task. But the early signs are promising. His mix of speed, flair, and tactical flexibility fits neatly into Slot’s evolving system.

As Liverpool look to defend their Premier League crown and mount a stronger push in Europe, players like Frimpong, Kerkez, and fellow summer addition Florian Wirtz will play central roles. Whether Slot builds a dynasty or becomes a one-season wonder may well depend on how quickly his new signings settle and how effectively he adapts to the Premier League grind.
