Joe Cole Urges Man Utd to Sack Ruben Amorim After Brentford Defeat: ‘They Need a Different Direction’

Manchester United’s struggles under Ruben Amorim hit a new low with a 3-1 defeat to Brentford, sparking fresh calls for change. Former Chelsea star Joe Cole believes the Red Devils must move on from the Portuguese coach, insisting the club needs a cultural reset to rediscover its identity.

Pressure is mounting on Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim after his side slumped to another dismal Premier League defeat, this time at the hands of Brentford. The 3-1 loss means United are still yet to record back-to-back league wins under the Portuguese coach, who has now managed just nine victories in 33 matches since taking charge in November 2024.

Amorim’s Struggles at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s frailties were exposed early in West London, with Brentford striker Igor Thiago scoring twice inside the opening 20 minutes. Benjamin Šeško briefly restored hope with his first goal for the club, but Bruno Fernandes’ penalty miss in the second half proved costly. Mathias Jensen’s stoppage-time strike sealed a deserved win for the Bees, leaving United with their 17th league defeat under Amorim.

Joe Cole Calls for Change

Speaking on TNT Sports, former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole did not hold back in his assessment of United’s situation:

It’s the heaviest shirt in world football because of the history, the expectations, and how poor it’s been. The manager’s job is to bring harmony and rejuvenate the culture. Whoever comes in has to galvanise the players, the club, the board, the owner, and the fans. They need a different direction.

Pressed on whether Amorim should be sacked, Cole added:

Yeah, it is… I don’t like saying that, but I think for him as well. He was the bright young spark, his stock was high, he’s clearly a good manager. But the mix and the blend of this situation doesn’t look like it’s working. It needs a culture change.

Will United Pull the Plug?

Despite mounting criticism, reports suggest Amorim retains the backing of the Manchester United hierarchy. However, the club would face a significant compensation bill if they opted to dismiss him mid-season, complicating any decision.

What’s Next for United?

The Red Devils will look to regroup when they host newly-promoted Sunderland on October 4 before the international break. A daunting trip to Anfield to face reigning champions Liverpool follows on October 19, a fixture that could prove decisive for Amorim’s future at Old Trafford.
