Kevin De Bruyne Opens Up on Napoli Move, MLS Interest, and His Manchester City Legacy

In a surprising summer twist, Kevin De Bruyne has traded the Premier League for Serie A, joining Napoli after his contract with Manchester City expired. The Belgian midfield maestro addressed the media at his unveiling in Italy, expressing his excitement for a new challenge—while making it clear that his heart remains firmly in Manchester.

From Manchester Icon to Napoli Newcomer

Despite an illustrious 9-year spell with Manchester City, De Bruyne found himself without a contract offer as the 2024–25 season came to a close. Now 34 and increasingly hampered by injuries, City appeared ready to move on. Still, when fit, De Bruyne proved he remains among Europe’s elite playmakers.

Last season, he posted the league’s best expected assist (xA) ratio and ranked among the top in chance creation. Only Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard delivered more open-play passes into the penalty area—an impressive feat for a player nearing the twilight of his career.

With his pedigree and availability on a free transfer, elite clubs around the world scrambled for his signature. But instead of heading to the MLS or Saudi Arabia, De Bruyne chose Napoli—defending champions of Italy and a club aiming to stay among Europe’s best.

Why Napoli and Not the MLS?

Major League Soccer made a serious push to land De Bruyne. Inter Miami held exclusive Discovery Rights, and San Diego FC and Chicago Fire were also keen. But the midfielder had other ideas.

“When I saw the full project and the chance to compete at a high level in Italy, I was excited,” said De Bruyne. “After so many years in the Premier League, it just felt like the right time to leave England.”

While tempted by the offers, the idea of leaving Europe’s top five leagues didn’t sit right with the veteran star. Instead, Napoli’s ambition and title-winning pedigree proved decisive.

Still a City Legend at Heart

De Bruyne was quick to affirm his loyalty to Manchester City despite his departure.

“I’m a Man City player for life,” he stated firmly. “That will never change. But the way things ended, I knew it was time to move on and look for a new challenge.”

Over nearly a decade, the Belgian international helped City to numerous domestic titles and was widely considered one of the Premier League’s best ever midfielders. His technical brilliance and playmaking vision were cornerstones of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Lukaku’s Influence and a Friendly Face in Naples

One factor that eased the transition was the presence of longtime friend and fellow Belgian Romelu Lukaku at Napoli. The two have shared a bond since their early teens, even rooming together briefly at Chelsea.

“Romelu was happy when I told him. He was pushing me to join,” De Bruyne revealed. “We’ve known each other since we were 13. Having him here helps—it’s someone who knows the coach, knows the team, and can help me adapt.”

De Bruyne also acknowledged the challenge of adapting to a new league and system but is embracing the opportunity to grow.
