Lauren James Racing Against Time to Be Fit for Euro 2025 Final After Ankle Injury

England’s hopes of defending their European title may hinge on the fitness of star forward Lauren James, who is in doubt for Sunday’s Euro 2025 final against Spain after suffering an ankle injury in the semi-final win over Italy.

Injury Clouds England’s Final Preparations

Lauren James, 23, limped off just before halftime in Tuesday’s 2–1 semi-final victory, leaving fans concerned as she watched the remainder of the match from the bench with an ice pack strapped to her ankle. Her presence on the pitch has been pivotal throughout the tournament, and any absence would be a major setback for the Lionesses as they prepare to face a formidable Spanish side in the final.

Wiegman Offers Hope — But No Certainty

England head coach Sarina Wiegman provided an update on Friday, revealing that James is working on her recovery and remains in contention — though far from guaranteed — to feature on Sunday.

“She’s still recovering,” Wiegman said. “She’s doing things on the pitch and we’ve got two more days, so we’ll give her every chance. We don’t know yet if she’ll make it, but the aim is to have all 23 players ready.”

The team is carefully monitoring her progress, with medical staff prioritizing both her immediate recovery and long-term fitness.

A Star Player with Big-Tournament Pedigree

James has made 33 appearances for the Lionesses and scored nine goals — including two in England’s emphatic 4–0 group stage win over the Netherlands earlier in the tournament. Her dynamic playing style and ability to change the game single-handedly have made her one of England’s most valuable assets.

“You give LJ the ball and you know she’s going to run through everybody and try to get her shot off,” midfielder Georgia Stanway said earlier in the campaign, highlighting James’s impact and threat in the attacking third.

England Bracing for a Final Without Their Star?

If James is ruled out, England will need to rely on squad depth and tactical adjustments to compensate for her absence. Players like Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone may be tasked with stepping up in the final showdown against a technically sharp Spain squad.

While the final decision will come down to how James responds to treatment over the next 48 hours, her potential absence looms large as England seeks to retain their European crown in Switzerland.
