Arsenal’s rise to the Premier League summit has sparked optimism among fans and pundits alike, but not everyone is convinced they’re out of the woods yet. With a thrilling title race unfolding, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have shared contrasting insights into what could either propel or derail the Gunners’ championship push. As the international break begins, Arsenal find themselves in pole position—but questions around squad mentality and pressure management still linger.

Arsenal’s Resurgence: From Chasers to Leaders
Mikel Arteta’s side have seized control of the Premier League table after a crucial run of results, capitalising on Liverpool’s stumbles against Crystal Palace and Chelsea. Back-to-back victories over Newcastle and West Ham erased a five-point gap, catapulting Arsenal to the top and positioning them as firm title contenders.

Unlike previous campaigns, Arsenal now boast significant squad depth and positional flexibility—something that could be vital in the final stretch of the season.

Shearer: Arsenal’s Strength in Depth is the X-Factor
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Alan Shearer was full of praise for Arsenal’s evolution, especially highlighting the impact of their improved bench strength.

“I’ve been really impressed with Arsenal,” Shearer said. “Even when Odegaard had to come off, they had someone like Zubimendi to bring on. That allowed Rice to move forward—and he ended up scoring. That level of quality off the bench makes all the difference.”

Shearer pointed to a stark contrast between Arsenal’s squad this season and that of last February when they lost to West Ham at the Emirates. “Back then, only two of the nine bench players are still there. Now, they’re bringing on £40–50 million players mid-match. That’s what sets them apart this year.”

He added: “A week ago, they were five points behind. Now, they’re a point ahead. It’s crazy how quickly things change.”

Lineker: Mentality Could Be Arsenal’s Undoing
While Lineker echoed some of Shearer’s optimism, he issued a subtle warning about Arsenal’s mentality as the title pressure intensifies. Referring to the club’s historical struggles under pressure, Lineker raised concerns about the Gunners becoming “a bit Arsenally”—a playful yet pointed remark suggesting potential late-season nerves.

He did, however, speak positively about Viktor Gyökeres, tipping the forward to thrive as he settles in. “He gives Arsenal a threat in behind and opens up space for the midfielders and wide players,” Lineker said. “With Saka looking back to his best, the goals will come. It’s promising for Arsenal.”

Richards: Pressure and Experience Will Decide the Outcome
Micah Richards also weighed in, agreeing that Arsenal have the talent and depth to go all the way—but questioned whether the players can manage the psychological pressure that comes with a title run-in.

“They’ve got the squad to win the league, definitely,” Richards noted. “But it comes down to those moments—whether you’re ahead or chasing. The pressure, the experience… that’s the real test. If they’re far enough ahead, they might avoid that, but it could go down to the wire.”
