Lionel Messi once again delivered a masterclass on the pitch, scoring twice to lead Inter Miami to a 3–1 win over Nashville SC in the opening match of their MLS Cup first-round playoff series on Friday night. Backed by another strong team performance and buoyed by Messi’s brilliance, Miami now holds a 1–0 lead in the best-of-three clash.
Messi Shines After Receiving Golden Boot
Before kickoff, the Argentine icon was honored with the MLS Golden Boot award for his league-best 29 goals in 28 regular-season appearances. Just minutes later, Messi proved why he’s still the face of the league, opening the scoring in the 19th minute.
The sequence began with Sergio Busquets recovering possession near the sideline and feeding Rodrigo De Paul, who spotted Messi making a driving run. After linking with Luis Suárez on the right flank, Messi finished the move with a diving header that sent DRV PNK Stadium into celebration.
Allende Extends Miami’s Advantage
Inter Miami doubled their lead in the 62nd minute thanks to Tadeo Allende’s precise header from Ian Fray’s cross. The goal gave Miami firm control of the contest and showcased their balanced attacking approach.
“We know playoffs are never easy, so it was important to start strong at home,” said De Paul after the match. “The team showed great focus and energy, knowing when to attack and when to hold back. We’re growing with every game.”
Messi Seals It Late as Miami Takes Command
In stoppage time, Messi struck again to put the game beyond doubt. Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis failed to collect a low cross from Jordi Alba, leaving the ball at Messi’s feet for an easy finish into an open net.
Nashville’s Hany Mukhtar managed a consolation goal deep into injury time, but it wasn’t enough to spoil Miami’s night.
Messi’s Contract Extension Adds to Celebration
The victory came just 24 hours after Messi signed a new three-year contract extension, keeping the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner in Miami through 2028. MLS Commissioner Don Garber, who presented Messi with his Golden Boot, praised the global superstar’s impact on the league.
“I don’t think anyone could have imagined how much Leo would elevate this club and this league,” Garber said. “He’s changed the trajectory of Major League Soccer. Having him for another three years is an incredible gift.”
Focus Turns to Game Two in Nashville
Despite the win—and a previous 5–2 victory over Nashville in the regular-season finale—Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano urged his squad to stay grounded ahead of Game Two on November 1.
“Nashville is a dangerous team that can hurt you if you lose focus,” Mascherano cautioned. “We’ve made progress, but we need to keep improving. Nothing is decided yet.”
