Liverpool could be set to rival Manchester United in the race for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as growing uncertainty surrounds Ibrahima Konaté’s future at Anfield. With Real Madrid reportedly closing in on the Frenchman, the Reds are assessing long-term defensive reinforcements, especially after a string of shaky performances and missed transfer targets.
Defensive Woes Mount for Liverpool
Liverpool kicked off the Premier League season in dominant fashion, stringing together five consecutive wins to sit comfortably atop the table. However, momentum has quickly shifted after back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, sparking fresh concerns about the team’s defensive stability.
The centre-back pairing, in particular, has come under the microscope. Injuries have thinned Arne Slot’s options, with Giovanni Leoni possibly sidelined for the entire season. Liverpool’s failure to land Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi on deadline day has left them dangerously short at the back.
Konaté Under Fire and Heading for the Exit?
Ibrahima Konaté’s form has significantly dipped, culminating in a dismal showing during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace. Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol did not hold back, branding Konaté’s first-half performance as “unbelievably horrendous” and criticising his decision-making and discipline.
Spanish outlet Defensa Central reports that Konaté is now “99%” certain to join Real Madrid, who see him as a long-term solution to their aerial weaknesses. Despite his recent struggles, the La Liga giants remain confident in his potential and are prepared to commit to a five-year deal.
Branthwaite Emerges as a Long-Term Target
With Konaté’s departure looking increasingly likely, Liverpool are exploring their options. Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, a long-standing Manchester United target, is now on their radar.
Former United and Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that he wouldn’t be surprised to see Liverpool tracking the 21-year-old. While a January move is considered unlikely—given Everton’s reluctance to sell and Branthwaite’s recent injury—Liverpool are expected to monitor his recovery closely.
Branthwaite, a left-footed centre-back, operates in the same position as Virgil van Dijk. Although not a direct replacement for Konaté, his potential to develop under the Dutch veteran could make him a valuable addition for the future.
Missed Opportunities and Transfer Uncertainty
Liverpool’s January plans remain uncertain. While Guehi remains a potential option, his expiring contract could draw interest from other clubs, intensifying competition. With the defensive unit lacking depth and confidence, the Reds may be forced to act swiftly once the winter window opens.
Despite sitting top of the table, Arne Slot has tactical issues to address, especially in defence. If Konaté exits and no immediate reinforcement is secured, Liverpool’s title ambitions could be derailed by a fragile backline.
