Udinese and Nigerian national team goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been officially exonerated from serious match-fixing allegations following an investigation by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). While the 25-year-old was cleared of any involvement in deliberate sporting misconduct, the FIGC has issued a two-month suspension based on a violation of general sportsmanship principles.

FIGC Clears Okoye of Match-Fixing Allegations

The controversy surrounded Okoye’s yellow card in Udinese’s Serie A clash with Lazio in March 2024. He was accused of deliberately time-wasting to manipulate betting outcomes, with reports suggesting a friend profited significantly—reportedly €120,000—from a bet related to the booking.

However, after thorough examination, the FIGC’s National Federal Court concluded that there was no evidence indicating intent to influence the match’s outcome. The court accepted the defense presented by Okoye’s legal team, effectively dismissing all match-fixing charges.

Two-Month Suspension for Breach of Sports Fairness

Although cleared of fixing the match, Okoye was still found in breach of Article 4 of the Federal Sports Justice Code, which emphasizes fairness and integrity in sport. As a result, he received a two-month ban from all official competitions.

This suspension runs from August 18 to October 19, meaning Okoye will miss seven competitive fixtures—six Serie A matches and one Coppa Italia tie.

Udinese Stands Firmly Behind Their Goalkeeper

Following the verdict, Udinese Calcio released a statement expressing satisfaction with the court’s decision to dismiss the most serious charges. The club reiterated its belief in Okoye’s integrity and reaffirmed its unwavering support for the player as he awaits the full reasoning behind the disciplinary measure.

“Udinese Calcio reasserts that it is firmly convinced of Maduka’s proper conduct,” the statement emphasized.

What Lies Ahead for Okoye

Having joined Udinese in 2023, Okoye had started to cement his place within the squad. Despite this temporary setback, the goalkeeper is expected to return to the pitch in late October. His focus will now be on regaining match fitness and continuing to contribute both for club and country.
