Man City Renew Pursuit of Livramento as Newcastle Fight to Keep Defensive Star
Manchester City have reignited their interest in Newcastle United’s rising full-back Tino Livramento, with reports revealing the Premier League champions are prepared to table an offer exceeding £50 million. As Pep Guardiola seeks to reinforce his defense, Newcastle are scrambling to secure Livramento’s long-term future with a lucrative new deal.
Livramento’s Breakout Season Draws Big-Club Attention
Tino Livramento’s 2023/24 campaign was nothing short of impressive. Initially deployed on the right side of defense, the 22-year-old seamlessly transitioned to left-back following Lewis Hall’s injury, showing versatility and maturity beyond his years.
His efforts helped Newcastle clinch the Carabao Cup — their first major trophy since 1955 — in a memorable 2-1 win over Liverpool. The momentum continued into the summer, where Livramento started five matches for England as they lifted the Under-21 European Championship. His performances didn’t go unnoticed, earning him his first senior England cap under interim boss Lee Carsley.
Guardiola Eyes Reinforcement After Walker Exit
Manchester City have been proactive in the transfer market, already spending approximately £126 million this summer. However, they’ve yet to address the right-back position — a gap left glaring after Kyle Walker’s transfer to Burnley.
Matheus Nunes was a stopgap solution last season, but Guardiola is reportedly looking for a long-term fit. Rico Lewis, though promising, has yet to fully convince. That has put Livramento — known for his composure, athleticism, and two-footed ability — at the top of City’s defensive wishlist.
Newcastle Push to Retain Star With Big Contract Offer
While City prepare to launch a formal bid, Newcastle are not standing idly by. The Magpies are reportedly offering Livramento a new deal that would elevate him among the club’s top earners, mirroring their approach to retain striker Alexander Isak amid Liverpool interest.
Sources suggest Newcastle are determined to keep the England international and are already in discussions with his representatives to extend his stay and ward off suitors. Their intent is clear: Livramento is a cornerstone of their future plans.
City Weigh Alternatives If Livramento Bid Fails
Despite their strong interest, Manchester City are not putting all their eggs in one basket. Juventus defenders Andrea Cambiaso and Nicolo Savona are reportedly on City’s radar as fallback options. Interestingly, Newcastle are also eyeing Savona, which could set up a competitive tug-of-war between the clubs.
Earlier in the window, City were offered Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries, who had a £20 million release clause before it expired in July. The club chose not to pursue a move at the time.
In addition, center-back Manuel Akanji has reportedly been granted permission to explore a transfer to Fenerbahce, suggesting further changes to City’s defensive line-up could be on the horizon.
