Manchester United’s summer transfer window remains far from settled as the club continues its push for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo. Despite recent reports suggesting a breakthrough, trusted journalist David Ornstein has poured cold water on claims of an agreement, revealing a significant financial gulf still exists between the two clubs. As fans eagerly await a third signing, uncertainty lingers around whether Mbeumo will be heading to Old Trafford.
United’s Transfer Activity: Two In, More to Come?
Manchester United have made two additions to their squad so far this summer. Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha arrived from Wolves, while 19-year-old defender Diego Leon joined from Paraguayan outfit Cerro Porteño. However, the Red Devils are aiming for more reinforcements—provided they can balance the books.
Offloading players remains a priority, with high-profile names like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony reportedly available for transfer. The funds raised could directly impact the club’s ability to close deals for further targets.
Mbeumo Chase Hits Roadblock Despite Reports of Breakthrough
Earlier reports from Football Transfers claimed United had struck a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo, suggesting negotiations had been finalized and the transfer was close to completion. According to those sources, Brentford’s asking price stood around €80 million, with the article stating all “remaining issues” had been resolved.
However, David Ornstein of The Athletic offered a different—and more cautious—take. In his report, Ornstein clarified that no agreement is close, and that a “considerable” gap remains between Manchester United and Brentford’s valuations.
“The gap between Manchester United and Brentford on their valuation of Bryan Mbeumo remains considerable,” Ornstein reported. “There have been no significant developments over the past couple of weeks, and a deal is still not imminent, but talks continue.”
Pressure Builds as Parker Weighs In
Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker voiced his concerns, suggesting the club would face major embarrassment if they fail to sign Mbeumo—especially with Tottenham also in the running.
“It’ll be very embarrassing for Manchester United if they can’t get the deal for Bryan Mbeumo over the line,” said Parker. “I do think they will get the deal done—Old Trafford is clearly his preference. If it falls through, it’ll be down to United not making it happen, not because Mbeumo doesn’t want the move.”
Parker also pointed out that while Spurs are reportedly interested, Mbeumo had already shown a willingness to leave Brentford under Thomas Frank’s management. Questions also remain about whether Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is fully behind the potential signing.
What’s Next for United?
As the transfer window progresses, Manchester United will need to act swiftly and strategically. With talks ongoing, the possibility of signing Mbeumo remains—but only if they can bridge the valuation gap and offload existing players to free up funds. For now, fans will have to wait and see if this long-running saga finally ends with Mbeumo in red.
