Mohamed Salah has officially etched his name into English football history books. The Liverpool talisman was named the 2025 PFA Player of the Year on Tuesday, becoming the first player ever to claim the prestigious individual honor three times. This latest accolade follows a stellar campaign in which Salah played a central role in guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title.
A Season to Remember for Salah
The Egyptian forward put in a breathtaking season, topping both the goals and assists charts with 29 goals and 18 assists, respectively. His consistency and leadership were pivotal as Liverpool surged to their first league title since 2020. While the Reds fell just short in the Carabao Cup, finishing as runners-up, Salah’s brilliance throughout the season left little doubt about his place among the game’s elite.
His dominant performances throughout the campaign also earned him a spot among the frontrunners for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. However, Liverpool’s early Champions League exit may work against his bid for that global honor.
Breaking Manchester City’s Recent Dominance
Salah’s win disrupts what had become a stronghold for Manchester City in recent years. City stars Phil Foden and Erling Haaland claimed the award in 2023 and 2024, respectively. This year, Salah edged out top contenders including Bruno Fernandes, Alexander Isak, Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, and his Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister.
By winning the award this year, Salah not only ends City’s recent streak but also makes personal history.
First Player to Win It Three Times
While legendary names like Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Thierry Henry have each won the PFA Player of the Year award twice—some even in back-to-back seasons—none have managed a third. Salah now stands alone as the only player to have done so, with previous wins in 2017–18 and 2021–22.
Interestingly, this marks the first time Salah’s Player of the Year award coincides with a Premier League title for Liverpool. During the club’s previous title-winning season in 2019–20, it was De Bruyne who received the honor.
Liverpool’s Rich PFA Legacy
Salah’s latest triumph also adds to Liverpool’s growing legacy in the PFA Player of the Year history books. Since the award’s inception in 1974, Liverpool players have now won it 10 times, including five since the 2012–13 season. That surpasses Manchester City’s tally of four in that same period.
The Legacy Continues
At 33, Mohamed Salah is showing no signs of slowing down. His third PFA Player of the Year award cements his place not just in Liverpool folklore, but in the pantheon of Premier League greats. With his historic milestone, Salah has redefined the benchmark for individual excellence in English football.
