Morgan Gibbs-White has explained why he committed his long-term future to Nottingham Forest despite Tottenham Hotspur triggering his release clause this summer. The midfielder says European nights at the City Ground and his bond with the fans played a “big reason” in his decision to stay.
Morgan Gibbs-White insists it was an easy choice to extend his Nottingham Forest stay, even after Tottenham Hotspur pushed hard to sign him during the summer transfer window. Spurs triggered the midfielder’s £60 million ($81m) release clause, but Forest refused to sanction the move — and instead rewarded the 25-year-old with a new three-year contract that keeps him at the City Ground until 2028.
Tottenham’s pursuit blocked
In July, Tottenham came closer than anyone to prising Gibbs-White away from Forest. With Ange Postecoglou keen to add creativity to his squad, Spurs were prepared to pay the release clause in full. But Forest, buoyed by their return to European competition for the first time in three decades, made it clear the midfielder was untouchable.
“I wanted to continue that journey”
Reflecting on his decision, Gibbs-White pointed to Forest’s long-awaited return to European football as the decisive factor.
“After everything we’ve been through together and knowing that we were back in Europe, I really wanted to continue that journey,” he said. “The fact that after 30 years we’re back here, at home, under the lights in Europe, the fans are going to be incredible. That was a big reason as to why I wanted to stay.”
Love for the fans
The England international has also become a symbol of the bond between players and supporters at the City Ground. Gibbs-White explained the heart gesture he regularly makes towards Forest fans after games.
“It’s something I always do every single game,” he said. “After every single game, I go and applaud the fans and show my love to the fans because they’re the ones that are paying their hard-earned money to come and watch us and support us. I feel like that’s the least I can do — walk around, clap, give my support and give my thanks.”
Forest’s European return
Gibbs-White’s commitment comes at a pivotal moment for Forest. The Reds kicked off their Europa League campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Real Betis, marking their first European fixture since 1995. They will next welcome Danish side FC Midtjylland to the City Ground on Thursday, as Phil Neville’s side aim to build momentum in their continental adventure.
By signing fresh terms, Gibbs-White has not only ended speculation over his future but also underlined his belief in Forest’s project — one that now carries the weight of history, ambition, and a fanbase ready to roar under the European lights once again.
