Newcastle United Nears Breakthrough in Striker Hunt with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa
Newcastle United are edging closer to securing their top attacking target of the summer, with Brentford forward Yoane Wissa reportedly keen on making the switch to St. James’ Park. The £35 million move is gathering momentum, with all parties hopeful of wrapping up the deal swiftly.
Wissa Emerges as Newcastle’s Leading Option
After weeks of frustration in the summer transfer market, Newcastle appear to have found a willing partner in Brentford and a motivated player in Wissa. The Magpies had previously pursued Hugo Ekitike, only for Liverpool to swoop in, and were then outpaced in the race for Benjamin Šeško, who is nearing a move to Manchester United.
With those setbacks behind them, Newcastle have turned their attention fully to Wissa—a player they’ve admired for months. The Brentford striker enjoyed a breakout 2024/25 Premier League campaign, netting 19 goals and establishing himself as one of the league’s most effective finishers.
Player Wants the Move, Deal Edging Closer
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie revealed that Wissa has made his intentions clear: he wants to leave Brentford and join Newcastle as soon as possible. It’s believed that his return to England from Brentford’s pre-season camp was motivated by his desire to finalise the transfer.
Downie also reported that Newcastle are “ready” to close the deal, with the striker’s representatives now in the UK to accelerate discussions. The agreed fee is said to be in the region of £35 million, although Brentford may attempt to push the price slightly higher.
Brentford’s Transfer Plans Could Unlock the Move
Brentford are reportedly preparing for Wissa’s departure by pursuing Bournemouth winger Dango Ouattara as a replacement. According to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, any progress Brentford make on that front could open the door for Newcastle to finalise the Wissa transfer.
Hope added that sources close to the situation are confident the deal “WILL happen,” aligning with Downie’s earlier reports. The chain of moves could also affect Liverpool, who remain interested in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. However, the Magpies have made it clear that no sale will be considered until a new forward is through the door.
What This Means for Newcastle
Eddie Howe has been eager to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new campaign, especially with Champions League qualification once again on the line. Wissa’s potential arrival would not only add Premier League-proven firepower but also allow Newcastle to assess possible outgoings—chief among them being Isak.
With Wissa pushing for the move and Newcastle ready to act, all eyes are now on Brentford and whether they can complete their own transfer business in time to facilitate this long-anticipated deal.
