Newcastle’s Push for Šeško Falls Short as Leipzig Hold Firm on Demands

Newcastle United’s pursuit of Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško has hit a roadblock after RB Leipzig rejected their €80 million proposal, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The offer, which included a €75 million upfront payment and €5 million in add-ons, reportedly did not meet the Bundesliga club’s full valuation—particularly due to the absence of a sell-on clause.

As the Magpies scramble to replace Alexander Isak, who is eyeing a Liverpool move, this failed bid may boost Manchester United’s chances of swooping in for Šeško, a forward long admired by top Premier League clubs.

Leipzig Unmoved by Newcastle’s Big-Money Offer

RB Leipzig remain steadfast in their stance on Šeško, making it clear that any serious bidder must meet their financial terms in full. Newcastle’s €80 million proposal was close to Leipzig’s asking price, but ultimately lacked a key component: the sell-on clause.

Reports indicate that Leipzig are demanding €75 million guaranteed, plus structured add-ons and a sell-on percentage. Without that clause, the German club deemed the offer insufficient, despite its high headline value.

This development gives Manchester United renewed hope as they continue to monitor the striker’s situation closely.

Manchester United Keeping Tabs Amid Šeško Uncertainty

While United are interested in Šeško, financial constraints may prevent them from making an immediate bid. The club is expected to offload players before making any formal approach, but the failure of Newcastle’s initial offer could buy them more time.

At 22, Šeško is considered one of Europe’s top emerging attacking talents. Although Arsenal and Chelsea have previously expressed interest, both clubs have since signed other targets. Arsenal opted for Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting Lisbon, while Chelsea reinforced with Liam Delap and João Pedro earlier in the window.

As of now, Šeško has yet to decide on his preferred destination, leaving both Newcastle and Manchester United hopeful.

Isak’s Potential Exit Fuels Newcastle’s Urgency

Newcastle’s bid for Šeško was directly tied to the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward is reportedly keen on joining Liverpool, who recently had a £110 million offer rejected. Isak’s withdrawal from Newcastle’s pre-season tour—citing a thigh injury—only intensified speculation.

To add to the drama, Magpies boss Eddie Howe revealed he learned of Isak’s situation through social media. Speaking at a press conference, Howe admitted he was in the dark about the Liverpool bid until after it was rejected.

“I really don’t know what happens next,” Howe stated. “My wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again, but this is football—anything can happen.”

What’s Next for Šeško?

With Newcastle’s opening bid turned down and Manchester United still assessing their financial position, Šeško’s next move remains uncertain. The striker is not rushing a decision, and his availability continues to stir up interest across Europe.

RB Leipzig, meanwhile, are holding firm—knowing full well the value they have in the young Slovenian forward.
