Nigeria Unveils CHAN 2024 Squad as Remo Stars Dominate Selection
Nigeria is set to launch its campaign at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a squad that heavily features players from NPFL champions Remo Stars. Head coach Eric Chelle announced a 23-man roster ahead of the tournament, which kicks off next month in East Africa, co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
The selection underlines Nigeria’s focus on homegrown talent, as all players selected ply their trade in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). With expectations high, the Super Eagles B team enters the tournament eyeing continental glory.
Remo Stars Lead the Charge
A standout feature of Chelle’s squad is the inclusion of nine players from Remo Stars, who recently clinched the NPFL title. Team captain Junior Nduka headlines the list, alongside prominent forwards Godwin Obaje and Sikiru Alimi, who are expected to drive Nigeria’s attacking play.
Other Remo Stars players making the cut include Sodiq Ismaila, Anas Yusuf, Olamilekan Adedayo, Michael Tochukwu, Akanni Qudus, and Jabbar Malik. Their familiarity from club competition is expected to translate into strong team chemistry on the international stage.
Preparation Begins in Zanzibar
Following a rigorous training camp at the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ogun State, the squad departed for Zanzibar on Thursday night for the second phase of their pre-tournament build-up.
The Zanzibar camp, scheduled from July 25 to 31, will be crucial for tactical fine-tuning. During this period, Nigeria will play two friendly matches against the Zanzibar national team on July 28 and 31, offering vital match practice before the tournament officially begins.
Speaking to the Super Eagles Media Team, striker Godwin Obaje expressed confidence in the squad’s unity and readiness:
“We’re like brothers here. We know each other from the league, so there’s chemistry already. We just need to give our best because Nigeria is one of Africa’s football powerhouses.”
Tough Group Draw Ahead
Nigeria has been placed in Group D, where they face a challenging path to the knockout stage. The Super Eagles will lock horns with defending champions Senegal, as well as Sudan and Congo—a group widely considered one of the toughest in the competition.
Success in the group stage will require tactical discipline and peak form, especially against a Senegalese side known for its physicality and cohesion.
