Palmer Shines as Chelsea Edge Palmeiras to Reach Club World Cup Semi-Finals

Chelsea secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Palmeiras at Lincoln Financial Field to book their spot in the Club World Cup semi-finals. Goals from Cole Palmer and a late own-goal sealed the win, with future Blue Estevão Willian netting for the Brazilians. The Blues now gear up for a clash with Fluminense in New Jersey.

Chelsea Advance to Club World Cup Semis After Gritty 2-1 Win Over Palmeiras

Chelsea have progressed to the Club World Cup semi-finals after a determined 2-1 win over Palmeiras in Philadelphia, with Cole Palmer once again at the heart of the action.

The Blues dominated the first half, controlling possession and carving out multiple chances. It was Palmer who broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, slotting home a composed finish after a deft touch on the edge of the area.

Despite a commanding 68% possession in the first 45 minutes, Chelsea couldn’t extend their lead, leaving the door open for Palmeiras to respond. That moment came early in the second half, when Estevão Willian — the 18-year-old wonderkid set to join Chelsea after the tournament — showed his class with a sharp strike from a tight angle to level the score.

Chelsea’s rhythm faltered in the second half as the game opened up, but the breakthrough came with just minutes remaining. Malo Gusto’s driven cross was deflected in off Palmeiras keeper Weverton for a fortunate own goal in the 83rd minute, ultimately securing the Blues’ passage to the final four.

🔁 Team News & Key Moments

Manager Enzo Maresca made several changes ahead of kickoff, with Moises Caicedo suspended and both Benoît Badiashile and Romeo Lavia unavailable through injury. Captain Reece James was initially slated to start in midfield but withdrew late, handing a first start to youngster Andrey Santos.

The match opened with early Chelsea pressure. Palmer, Nkunku, and Chalobah all had chances to extend the lead, while Palmeiras didn’t manage a shot on target until the 42nd minute.

In the second half, Chelsea introduced Joao Pedro and Noni Madueke, both of whom brought renewed energy. Madueke came close to a goal twice in stoppage time, including a shot off the post.

⚽ Scorers:

  • Chelsea: Palmer (16’), Weverton (OG, 83’)
  • Palmeiras: Estevão Willian (53’)

What’s Next?

Chelsea now turn their attention to the semi-finals, where they will face Brazilian side Fluminense on Tuesday night at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 PM local / 8 PM UK time.
