Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola enjoyed a rare break from football as he watched Carlos Alcaraz defeat Jannik Sinner in the US Open final, with the Spaniard clinching his third Grand Slam title.
Pep Guardiola swapped the dugout for the stands at Flushing Meadows on Sunday, where the Manchester City manager was seen cheering on Carlos Alcaraz as the Spaniard defeated Jannik Sinner in the US Open final.
Alcaraz, 22, produced a stunning display to beat his Italian rival 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and claim the final Grand Slam of the year, as well as return to the world No. 1 ranking. Guardiola was among a star-studded crowd in New York that also included U.S. President Donald Trump, NBA superstar Steph Curry, and Friends actress Courteney Cox.
For Guardiola, the trip offered a brief escape from the pressures of Manchester City’s uneven start to the Premier League season. His side have collected just three points from their opening three matches, with a 2-1 defeat to Brighton before the international break sparking questions over whether City’s struggles from last season are now becoming a trend rather than a blip.
Interestingly, while Guardiola was enthusiastically supporting Alcaraz, the young tennis champion has long been vocal about his Real Madrid allegiance — making the sight of Barcelona’s legendary former coach in his corner all the more ironic.
The Manchester City boss will now switch focus back to football, with the small matter of the Manchester derby looming. City host rivals United next Sunday in a fixture that could prove pivotal in shaping momentum early in the season. Guardiola will be hoping his brief tennis-inspired respite provides some renewed energy for one of the Premier League’s biggest occasions.
