Real Madrid's Pursuit of William Saliba Intensifies

Real Madrid intensify their pursuit of William Saliba with a delegation set to negotiate with Arsenal, while Liverpool‘s Konaté remains a viable alternative if their pursuit falters.

Real Madrid are reportedly not backing down in their pursuit of William Saliba, with a delegation set to head to London to begin negotiations with Arsenal over the potential transfer of the French defender. The move comes amid concerns over their defensive depth, following a poor performance in their Club World Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey.

What’s Happening?

According to reports from Cadena SER, Xabi Alonso has turned his attention to bolstering Real Madrid’s defence, and the 23-year-old Saliba has become one of their top targets. The young centre-back impressed in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in April, a performance that reportedly shot him to the top of Madrid’s wishlist. Despite Saliba being under contract with the Gunners until 2027, Madrid are undeterred and are preparing to initiate formal talks with both Arsenal and the player.

The Bigger Picture

Real Madrid are reportedly getting ready to send a delegation to London for direct negotiations with Arsenal, and to meet with Saliba’s representatives. Although Arsenal has consistently insisted that Saliba is not for sale, Madrid’s interest in the Frenchman is continuing to grow. The Spanish club sees Saliba as a key figure for the future, a player who could lead their defensive line for years to come.

In case their efforts to land Saliba are unsuccessful, Liverpool‘s Ibrahima Konaté is another name on Madrid’s radar. The 24-year-old French defender is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, and despite Liverpool’s attempts to extend his deal, Konaté has thus far resisted offers. With his future uncertain, Real Madrid could look to sign him either this summer or next, either for a cut-price deal or on a free transfer.

What’s Next for Real Madrid?

Even if Madrid manage to secure one of their French targets, neither Arsenal nor Liverpool can rest easy. Marca reports that Real Madrid may pursue both Saliba and Konaté in successive summer windows, as they aim to refresh their ageing defence.

Madrid fans will be hoping they can successfully bring in one of these top-tier talents to bolster their defensive ranks ahead of the 2025/26 season.
