Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is once again at the center of media debate following scathing remarks from Roy Keane after the Red Devils’ 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. While Keane questioned Shaw’s commitment and fitness record, fellow United legend Rio Ferdinand has offered a more supportive perspective—predicting a strong comeback performance from the England international.

Roy Keane Slams Shaw After City Defeat
Following United’s humbling loss in the Manchester derby, Roy Keane didn’t hold back in his assessment of Luke Shaw. The former captain labelled Shaw’s display “unacceptable,” going so far as to say the full-back has been “getting away with murder for years” due to frequent injuries and a perceived lack of aggression.

“Shaw is an international footballer,” Keane said. “So for him to get caught out like that… Always injured, never quite fit, and when he plays, he doesn’t look like he wants to tackle anyone.”

Shaw Responds with Honesty and Accountability
Rather than deflect the criticism, Shaw took a mature approach and acknowledged that Keane’s comments weren’t entirely off the mark. The left-back admitted he needs to raise his level and remain fit if he’s to consistently perform for club and country.

His candid response was well received by fans and former professionals alike, signaling a player aware of his responsibilities and determined to silence the doubters.

Maguire and Ferdinand Rally Behind Shaw
Teammate Harry Maguire was quick to defend Shaw, with Rio Ferdinand also offering a vote of confidence in the 28-year-old. Speaking to MEN Sport, Ferdinand praised both players for their maturity—Maguire for standing up for his teammate, and Shaw for owning up to his form.

“I think it’s great from Harry Maguire. That’s the role of a senior player—defend your teammate when you feel they’re being unfairly treated,” Ferdinand said. “I also really liked Shaw’s response. That honesty, that accountability—that’s what you want to see from a professional.”

Ferdinand Predicts Strong Reaction from Shaw
Ferdinand didn’t just applaud Shaw’s self-awareness—he backed the defender to respond the right way on the pitch. With United set to face Brentford this weekend, the former centre-back believes Shaw will use the criticism as fuel.

“I’m sure Luke will put in a performance this weekend that makes people say: ‘Yes, he’s got the right mentality.’ He’s a magnificently talented player who’s just been unlucky with injuries,” Ferdinand said. “When you can’t stay fit, you can’t build rhythm or consistency—two things vital at a top club.”

Consistency the Missing Piece for Shaw
There’s little debate over Shaw’s natural ability. When fully fit, he’s proven himself to be among the Premier League’s top full-backs. But Ferdinand stressed that without consistent game time, it’s difficult for any player to reach and maintain elite standards.

“If you’re not consistently available, it’s hard to make your mark or command the level of performance expected at Manchester United,” Ferdinand concluded.
