Mason Mount Backed to Shine in 2025/26 as Rio Ferdinand Predicts Major Comeback

Manchester United fans may not have had much to cheer about last season, but club legend Rio Ferdinand believes that could change—starting with Mason Mount. After two frustrating, injury-hit campaigns at Old Trafford, the former Chelsea midfielder is being tipped to make a major impact in the 2025/26 season. According to Ferdinand, Mount has everything needed to be “like a new signing” for United, and new manager Ruben Amorim seems to agree.

With United coming off one of their worst-ever Premier League finishes—15th place without a trophy—few players are safe. But Mount might just be the redemption story United desperately needs.

A Season to Forget at Old Trafford

Manchester United endured a nightmare 2024/25 campaign, finishing a dismal 15th in the Premier League. The squad, which underperformed on nearly every front, is now under scrutiny as Amorim begins his first full season in charge. Despite talks of a major squad overhaul, the club has struggled to offload underperformers due to both market disinterest and player contracts.

Marcus Rashford is the only high-profile departure so far, with Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia still on the books. Meanwhile, the club is banking on a few key players—Mount included—to rediscover their best form under Amorim’s guidance.

Rio Ferdinand Sees a Fresh Start for Mount

Speaking to talkSPORT, former United defender Rio Ferdinand expressed his optimism about Mount’s potential resurgence. After speaking with the 25-year-old in Chicago during preseason, Ferdinand highlighted the emotional and mental challenges Mount faced due to injuries.

“He’s been robbed of playing time—it’s been really disappointing,” Ferdinand said. “Being injured at a new club can be soul-crushing. But now, he’ll feel like a new signing.”

Ferdinand emphasized Mount’s track record of being a manager’s favorite, especially during Chelsea’s Champions League-winning season. “He’s got the quality, the work ethic, the engine. He just needs the minutes.”

Amorim Also Believes in Mount’s Revival

New United boss Ruben Amorim has also thrown his support behind Mount, praising the midfielder’s professionalism and commitment.

“Mount gives 100% in every training session and every game,” Amorim said. “That’s the key to maintaining consistency. He works a lot, and I believe he will carry this form into the season.”

Mount’s late-season displays offered a glimpse of what he can bring to the squad when fully fit, and both Amorim and Ferdinand are convinced the best is yet to come.

Can Mount Be the Spark United Needs?

With United desperate to turn the page after a catastrophic season, Mount’s comeback could prove pivotal. If he stays injury-free and continues to impress under Amorim’s system, he may finally deliver on the promise that brought him to Old Trafford.

United fans will be hoping Rio Ferdinand’s prediction turns out to be spot-on.
