United boss praises new signings after goalless pre-season opener against Leeds
Manchester United began their pre-season campaign with a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Leeds in Stockholm, but manager Rúben Amorim found encouragement in the performances of two debutants—Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon.
Cunha, a £40 million arrival from Wolves, offered a rare bright spark in an otherwise disjointed first half. Operating as a central attacker, the Brazilian consistently dropped between the lines, injecting pace and directness into United’s build-up. It was a glimpse of the attacking aggression that Amorim has demanded since taking the reins at Old Trafford.
“I think Matheus Cunha showed what we need,” Amorim told MUTV. “He’s a player who, when he receives the ball between the lines, can be really aggressive in the direction of the opponents. That’s what we’ve been missing.”
Cunha’s sharp movement and ability to carry the ball through the thirds added some much-needed urgency to a United midfield that struggled for tempo. While the final product was lacking, the intent was clear—and Amorim will hope it’s just the beginning of a fruitful transition from Molineux to Manchester.
Leon, meanwhile, was handed a 45-minute opportunity at left wing-back. The 18-year-old Paraguayan, recently signed from Cerro Porteño, is still acclimatising to life in England but has quickly caught his manager’s eye with his attitude and physical attributes.
“Diego Leon comes from Paraguay. It’s his second week in Manchester. He’s done well. He’s powerful, he’s learning. He will be a very good player,” Amorim said.
The United boss was less impressed with the overall rhythm of his side, particularly in midfield, where he admitted the team lacked pace and struggled to recover the ball. Despite the issues, the Red Devils still managed to carve out a few chances, though none were converted.
With the U.S. leg of their pre-season tour up next, Amorim will be looking to refine his team’s sharpness while continuing to integrate the summer arrivals. Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join up with the squad soon following his move from Brentford, adding another dimension to the attack.
For Cunha and Leon, the early signs are promising. United fans may not have seen fireworks against Leeds, but Amorim appears confident that his newest recruits have the tools to make a real impact in the coming months.
