Manchester United may have secured a much-needed win over Sunderland, but tension continues to simmer behind the scenes. Manager Ruben Amorim is facing criticism for his gloomy post-match demeanor, with former staffers and ex-players warning that his comments could be hurting the squad’s morale. As pressure mounts ahead of a crucial clash against Liverpool, questions are swirling around Amorim’s leadership and communication style.

Red Devils Back in the Win Column, But Doubts Persist
United’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland lifted them to 10th in the Premier League standings, offering a glimmer of hope after a disappointing start to the season. However, the result has done little to ease concerns over Amorim’s future, especially with a daunting trip to Anfield looming after the international break.

The Portuguese manager has already faced intense speculation about his job security, and had United lost to Sunderland, reports suggest he may have been dismissed. Instead, the win only temporarily cooled the heat, with fans and pundits still skeptical of the team’s direction.

Former Scout Questions Amorim’s Public Approach
Mick Brown, a former chief scout at Manchester United, has voiced concerns over Amorim’s handling of the media. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown suggested that the manager’s negative post-match remarks—even after victories—are likely impacting player confidence.

“A lot of what he says doesn’t make sense,” Brown stated. “Blaming pundits like Gary Neville for influencing his players is just a weak excuse. Results are what matter, not outside noise.”

Brown went on to criticize Amorim for deflecting blame and refusing to take responsibility when things go wrong. “Even in victory, he focuses on the problems. That kind of negativity doesn’t lift a squad—it drags it down,” he added.

Negativity Seeping Into the Dressing Room?
There’s growing concern that Amorim’s public criticism is more than just media posturing—it might reflect how he communicates behind closed doors. Brown speculated that if the manager is this pessimistic in interviews, his tone in training and team talks could be equally draining.

“You’ve just won a match, but instead of celebrating progress, he’s highlighting issues. That creates a toxic atmosphere,” Brown warned.

This sentiment is echoed by former United players who’ve urged Amorim to show greater tactical flexibility and maintain a more balanced tone in the media, especially when the club is desperate to rebuild confidence.

Club Identity Under Scrutiny Amid England Snub
Adding to the frustration is the notable absence of Manchester United players in the latest England squad—apart from Marcus Rashford, who is currently out on loan. Former winger Gordon Hill didn’t hold back in expressing his disappointment.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Hill called the situation “absolutely disgraceful,” suggesting it’s a sign that the club’s proud legacy is slipping away. “If it’s true there’s not a single Man Utd player in the squad besides Rashford, that tells me our history is disappearing,” he wrote.

What’s Next for Amorim and United?
With a vital test against reigning champions Liverpool up next, Amorim’s position could become even more precarious. A poor result at Anfield may reignite calls for change, especially if performances continue to lack consistency and cohesion.

For now, all eyes are on Amorim—not just for how his team performs on the pitch, but for how he addresses the growing unrest off it.
